Pitcher, Vrabel Lead Cats to Victory Over Davenport in Clarion Tourney Finale

Tatiana Pitcher had a career-17 kills, and Caitlin Vrabel added 13 kills and a match-high eight kills to lead the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team to a 3-sets-to-1 victory over Davenport (MI) University to close out the Clarion University Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Saturday. The Mountain Cats evened their record at 2-2.  J.C. Longeville earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
 
Pitt-Johnstown and Davenport split the first sets, but the Mountain Cats took control and won the final two sets, 27-25 and 25-14.
 
7412Pitt-Johnstown fell behind by three early in the first set, but came back with an 8-2 run to take a three-point lead of its own.  Four straight points put the Mountain Cats in front on Longeville's service ace, and Gray's ace made it 15-12.  Davenport got a kill from Kendra DeJonge to knot it at 24 and force extra points, but Pitcher's kill put Pitt-Johnstown back in front and a Panthers' attack error gave the Mountain Cats a 26-24 win.
 
A 4-0 Pitt-Johnstown spurt, capped by another ace from Gray, erased another three-point deficit midway through the second set and gave the Mountain Cat a 12-11 advantage.  Davenport was able to regain the lead at 20-19 on Kenzy Korstange's kill and used Camryn VanderLeest's kill to even the match at one set each with a 25-23 victory.
 
In the third set, the Panthers ran out to an 11-4 lead on Hayley Kreiger's kill, before Caitlin Vrabel's got the Mountain Cats back to within three at 14-11.  Davenport then went up 24-21, but Pitt-Johnstown scored three unanswered points to force extra points, where the Mountain Cats took advantage of a pair of 7414service aces to secure a 27-25 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown raced out to a 15-7 lead off of back-to-back kills from Pitcher and never looked back in the 25-14 victory.  The Mountain Cats pushed the lead into double digits at 22-12 and closed out the match on Vrabel's kill and Gabi DeRenzo's ace.
 
Pitcher ended the match with 17 kills, nine digs, and three blocks, and Vrabel chipped-in 13 kills and eight blocks for Pitt-Johnstown.  Gray had nine kills and three aces, while Lauren Gechter had eight kills and four blocks, and Anna Johns tallied seven kills in the victory.
 
Longeville finished with a match-high 47 set assists and 10 digs.  The Mountain Cats also got a match-high 30 digs from Erin Carmody and 12 digs from DeRenzo.
 
Constange and DeJonge each had nine kills for Davenport, which dropped to 1-3 on the year.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to the Stonehill (MA) Tournament next weekend and to the Lake Erie (OH) Tournament on September 21-22, before opening its home schedule with PSAC matches against Shepherd (WV) on September 27 and Shippensburg on September 28.
