
Andrew Jeffery netted a second half goal for the Mountain Cat men's soccer team, but Wheeling (WV) University jumped out to a 4-0 lead on its way to a 6-1 non-conference victory over Pitt-Johnstown in Saturday's night 2021 season-opener in Wheeling, W.Va.

Wheeling took a quick 1-0 lead six minutes into the match on Daniel Skarpnes goal that beat Mountain Cat goalkeeper
Devin Reichenbach to the bottom left corner of the net, before Harry Martin finished an assist from Miguel Martin in the 38
th minute that gave the Cardinals a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Skarpnes' netted his second goal of the night 10 minutes into the second half, and Richard Afolayanka added a goal two in the 57
th minute to increase Wheeling's lead to 4-0.

Tyler Serman, but goals from Afolayanka in the 63

th minute pushed Wheeling's lead out to 6-1.

Serman picked-up up the win in net for Wheeling after seeing two shots, making one save, and allowing one goal.

Reichenbach played the first 71 minutes in goal for the Mountain Cats and faced 20 shots, made eight saves, and surrendered all six goals.Â
Sage Parsley played the final 19 minutes and didn't allow a goal. Parsley saw three shots and made one save for the Mountain Cats.

The Mountain Cats continue a stretch of four straight road matches to begin the season with a non-conference match at Penn State New Kensington on Tuesday. Pitt-Johnstown will make its 2021 home debut when it hosts a non-conference match against D'Youville (NY) on September 21 at 4 p.m.
