The Pitt-Johnstown men's and women's basketball teams will host a pair of PSAC Crossover games before breaking for the holiday season. On Sunday, the Mountain Cats will welcome West Chester, before Millersville visits the Sports Center on Monday. The women will tip-off both doubleheaders at 1 p.m.
Head Coach
Mike Drahos' (10th year) Pitt-Johnstown women are 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West after given defending NCAA National Champions and No. 6/No. 16 Glenville State (WV) everything it could handle in a non-conference match-up, Tuesday night in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats held a five-point halftime advantage, and trailed by just five with six minutes remaining, but the Pioneers were able secure a 79-62 win.
Ashley Norling led Pitt-Johnstown with a double-double if 15 points and game-high 12 rebounds, while
Peyton Alazaus had 13 points. The Mountain Cats also got nine points from
Kylah Franklin and eight points from
Cassidy Crawford.
West Chester, under ninth-year Head Coach Kiera Wooden, is 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East following Sunday's 99-46 non-conference win at Wilmington (DE). Emily McAteer scored a game-high 25 points, while Leah Johnson and Michelle Kozicki collected 16 and 14 points, respectively in Sunday's win. The Golden Rams also earned a 79-67 win over Mercyhurst and 72-66 win over Gannon to open PSAC Crossover-play on Dec. 2 and 3.
Last season, Pitt-Johnstown and West Chester met in West Chester on Dec. 3 and the Golden Rams came away with a close, 62-54, victory. Alazaus scored 17 points, while
Olivia Fasick chipped-in 12 points, and
Makalyn Clapper had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Mountain Cats. West Chester was led by Kyra Jefferson's game-high 21 points and eight rebounds and Alexa Abbonizio's 11 points.
Third-year Head Coach Sharay Hall's Millersville Marauders, had won five of their last six games and were 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC East entering Sunday's game at Clarion. The Marauders got a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds from Taylor Langan and 10 points from Bria Beverly in a 68-52 victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday. Millersville also opened conference-play with an 82-70 win over Edinboro on Dec. 2 and a 75-62 loss to Mercyhurst on Dec. 3.
Pitt-Johnstown has won three straight games against Millersville and holds a 7-1 advantage in the series since the 2004-05 season. Last season,
Makalyn Clapper scored a game-high 23 points, while
Olivia Fasick and Norling added 13 and 10 points, respectively to lead the Mountain Cats to a 63-56 win in Millersville on Dec. 4. Lauren Lister's 22 points and six rebounds paced the Marauders.
The Pitt-Johnstown men, under Head Coach
Bob Rukavina (34th-year), comes in at 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West. The Mountain Cats opened PSAC Crossover-play with a 77-59 victory at Bloomsburg on Dec. 2 and a 92-60 loss at East Stroudsburg on Dec. 3.
John Paul Kromka's double-double of 16 points and game-high 14 rebounds and
Ryan Smith's 12 points paced four double figure scorers.
Jared Jakubick and
Caiden Landis also tallied 10 points apiece. In the setback at East Stroudsburg, Smith added 18 more points and six rebounds and
Joe Batt had 14 points for the Mountain Cats.
Kromka enters Sunday's game ranked sixth on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List (1,556 points) and fourth on the all-time rebounding list (779 rebounds). His 261 career blocks are just 11 shy of Mark Hensel's record of 272 and his 257 assists are 11 shy of 15th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time List.
Drew Magestro is currently 10th on the all-time 3-point field goals list with 163.
West Chester is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC East under 14th-year Head Coach Damien Blair. After splitting a pair of games to begin conference-play on Dec. 2 and 3, the Golden Rams, ranked ninth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Rankings, secured an 80-60 non-conference victory over Holy Family on Dec. 8. Robert Smith poured in 23 points, while Kyle McGee had 18 points, and Eli Barrett had 16 points and eight rebounds against Holy Family.
Pitt-Johnstown and West Chester have met seven times since 2005-06 and the Golden Rams hold a slim, 4-3, advantage. Last season, the Mountain Cats earned a 78-70 victory in West Chester on Dec. 3.
Fred Mulbah's game-high 27 points and seven rebounds, and Kromka's 19 points and game-high 13 rebounds led Pitt-Johnstown. McGee's 16 points and 11 rebounds and Smith's 15 points and six boards led the Golden Rams.
Sixth-year Coach Casey Stitzel's Millersville Marauders were 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East prior to playing Clarion on Sunday. The Marauders dealt Edinboro a 67-56 loss in their PSAC-opener on Dec. 2, before defeating Mercyhurst, 84-73, on Dec. 3. Keith Mency scored 16 points, Jahme Ested and Ryan Davis each had 14 points, and Matt Dade tallied 13 points against the Lakers.
Pitt-Johnstown has won the last five meetings against the Marauders, including an 81-53 victory in Millersville on Dec. 4 of last year. Magestro's 23 points and five rebounds and
Fred Mulbah's 21 points and six boards paced the Mountain Cats. Jaden Faulkner and Caden Najdawi each netted 11 points for Millersville.
The Mountain Cat men and women travel to a PSAC Crossover game at Shepherd (WV) on December 30, before returning home to host a conference crossover doubleheader against Kutztown on January 4. The women are scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, before the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
