Baseball Suffers Pair of Road Losses to Conclude PSAC West Series Against No. 17 Seton Hill

Greensburg, PA

Prosper_Garrett.jpgGarrett Prosper and Asher Corl each hit home runs for Pitt-Johnstown, but 17th-ranked Seton Hill was able to complete the four-game PSAC Western Division sweep over the Mountain Cats with 6-3 and 9-0 wins, Friday afternoon in Greensburg.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 10-10-1, and 0-4 in the PSAC West.

In the opener, Jack Oberdorfer's RBI single in the Seton Hill first gave the Griffins an early lead, but Pitt-Johnstown answered to tie it on Prosper's two-out solo homer to center in the Pitt-Johnstown second.

Mountain Cat starter Ben Briggs and Seton Hill's Aidan Layton kept it knotted at one until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffins plated a pair of unearned runs to regain the lead.

Pitt-Johnstown quickly tied in in the top of the sixth.  Seton Hill reliever Ashton Wetzler walked Dylan Broderick two lead off the inning, and Corl followed two batters later with a two-run home run to center.

Corl_Asher.jpgHowever, Seton Hill struck for three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles from Isaiah DiAndreth and Neal McDermott sandwiched around a sacrifice fly from Oberdorff.

Prosper and Corl each homered, while Broderick double and scored a run and Tyler Smith added a base hit for the Mountain Cats.

Briggs suffered the loss and is now 1-1.  Briggs tossed the first 5-plus innings and surrendered four runs (2 earned) on nine hits.  He struck out six and walked two.  Antonio Caporossi allowed two in relief of Briggs, and Jared Hoener held Seton Hill scoreless on one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Griffins reliever Nash Bryan got the win to improve to 2-1 after holding Pitt-Johnstown hitless over the final 1.1 innings.  Layton pitched the first 4.2 innings and gave up an earned run on three hits.

In the nightcap, Drew Garth scored on a Pitt-Johnstown throwing error in the bottom of the second to put Seton Hill on top, 1-0.

The Griffins increased it to 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the third, before adding five more in the bottom of the sixth, include Oberdorf's three-run homer.

Mountain Cat Wil Fetrow got the start and allowed four runs (3 earned) on seven hits over the first four innings.  Fetrow, who took the loss and dropped to 1-2, struck out two and walked three.

Justin Turcovski, Josh Ulery, and Corl all had hits for Pitt-Johnstown.

With the wins, Seton Hill improved to 15-4-1 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC West.

The Mountain Cats begin a four-game, home-and-home PSAC West series with a doubleheader at Clarion on Friday, before concluding the series with a pair of games against the Golden Eagles at Point Stadium on April 2.
