Jakubick, Mountain Cats triumph over Edinboro

Edinboro, PA

Jakubick_Jared.jpgJared Jakubick drilled five 3-pointers on his way to scoring a team-high 20 points to lift Pitt-Johnstown over Edinboro 77-63 on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Mountain Cats, who have won three in a row, improved to 14-5 (10-3 PSAC).

Joe Batt tallied 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field for Pitt-Johnstown. Drew Magestro hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. John Paul Kromka added 13 points, grabbed nine boards and blocked three shots.

The Mountain Cats found themselves down 7-1 less than four minutes in, but quickly responded with a near-perfect five-minute stretch that amounted to a 17-3 run to go on top 18-10 at the 11:33 mark of the first half. Pitt-Johnstown would not trail after that and continued to pour it on late into the first 20 minutes.

A 15-5 run that was kickstarted with a 3-pointer by Batt and bookended by a three by Jakubick enabled the Mountain Cats to take a 42-27 advantage into the break.

Pitt-Johnstown shot 16 of 30 (53.3%) from the field in the first half and connected on nine of its 14 3-point attempts, while holding Edinboro to a 33.3% (10 of 30) clip.

The Mountain Cats racked up 20 bench points, while the Scots were limited to just five. They also scored 20 points off of 15 Edinboro turnovers.

Kromka's layup off an assist from Jakubick gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of 18 with 13:53 left to play. Edinboro closed to within 10 with a little more than five minutes remaining, but a quick 6-0 run capped by two free throws from Magestro helped stave off any thoughts of a comeback.

Kierell Green had a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Scots, who fell to 5-13 (3-10 PSAC).

The Mountain Cats visit California (PA) on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
