Pitt-Johnstown struck first in its trip to Mercyhurst, but it did little to rattle the nationally ranked Lakers, who posted four unanswered goals in a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountain Cats slipped to 3-4 (1-3 PSAC). The Lakers, who came into the match ranked 20th in the country, won their fourth consecutive game to move to 10-1 (3-1 PSAC).
In the 11th minute, redshirt freshman Oscar Trilles Monferrer slipped behind defenders and scored his first career goal on an assist from Jaeger James to make it 1-0.
But Mercyhurst responded roughly a minute later when Dylan Sumner registered the first of three goals on the afternoon to tie the match at 1-all. In the 18th minute, Sumner scored again with the help of Frank Lovett and the Lakers took a 2-1 lead into the break. Sumner extended the lead to 3-1 on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Ignacio Gallegolo capped the scoring with the help of Jonathan Chase early into the 88th minute.
Jacob Tichnell spent all 90 minutes in goal and recorded eight saves for the Mountain Cats. Connor Luther had the other shot on goal.
The Mountain Cats entertain No. 10 Gannon on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Soccer Field.
