Lamesta propels Mountain Cats to draw with No. 21 Mercyhurst on Senior Day

Johnstown, PA

A pair of second-half goals, including a remarkable last-gasp tally in the 89th minute, helped Pitt-Johnstown surprise No. 21 Mercyhurst and force a 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats sit at 3-9-5 overall (3-9-4 PSAC). It was the first time all season that the PSAC West-leading Lakers, who are now 13-2-1 overall (12-1-1 PSAC), settled for a tie.

Pitt-Johnstown honored Meagan Aranha, Megan Dietz, Megan Giesey, Haley Neidig, Mary Reese, Katelyn Rudy, Lexi Stevens, and Jessica Susz before the match began in recognition of Senior Day.

With the clock ticking down, the Mountain Cats received a free kick opportunity from midfield after a foul was charged to the Lakers. Susz launched a high-arching ball downfield, floating it into the center of the box where Sophia Lamesta slipped past the defense, caught the ball off the end of her foot and sent a shot past Mercyhurst goalkeeper Maddie Elbro.

The tally was Lamesta's fourth goal of the season and Susz's third assist of the year. Pitt-Johnstown was in position to tie the match late thanks to Lydia Roman's unassisted goal in the 65th minute that made it 2-1.

Mercyhurst jumped on top in the 11th minute when Corinne Morgan scored unassisted. Less than four minutes into the second-half, the Lakers padded their lead on Teagan Mehalko's goal that came off an assist from Karah Van Horn.

Goalkeeper Megan Giesey faced 24 shots and registered nine saves in all 90 minutes. Haley Neidig had a team-high two shots on goal.

The Mountain Cats wrap up the 2023-24 campaign with a visit to Clarion set for Friday at 7 p.m.
