Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader at Lock Haven

Lock Haven, PA

For the second straight day, the Pitt-Johnstown softball team bounced back from an opening-game loss to split a doubleheader.  The Mountain Cats suffered an 18-2 setback in Wednesday's first game of a non-conference pair at Lock Haven, but banged out 16 hits, including three apiece from Julia Mooney and Tori Ravan, in an 8-6 win in game two.  The Mountain Cats are 6-8.

In the opener, Lock Haven got its bats going early and scored three runs in each of the first two innings off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Julie Shinavski.

Three more runs off of reliever Alexis Hrivnak in the bottom of the third pushed it out to 9-0, before the Bald Eagles struck for nine more runs in the fourth.

Pitt-Johnstown scored two in the fifth when Kayla Miehl reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a Jenna Tallman base hit, and scored Maddie Flowers' a two-run double to center.

Flowers had two hits and drove in two with her double, while Mooney was 2-for-2 with a walk for Pitt-Johnstown, Emilia Santiago, Radvan, and Tallman all had hits for the Mountain Cats.

Shinavski slipped to 0-2 after giving up six runs (5 earned) on seven hits over the first two innings.  Hrivnak also pitched two innings and surrendered 12 runs on 11 hits.

Delaney Good went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs, and Summer Peters added a pair of doubles and three RBI to lead Lock Haven.

In game two, the Mountain Cats jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead.  A lead-off single in the top of the first from Santiago and a walk to Laura Fox put runners on first and second.  After a passed ball moved them up a base, Mooney drove home Santiago with a base hit to center.

Lock haven answered to tie it on Bella Schmitt's RBI ground out in the bottom of the first, and took the lead, 2-1, on Haley Lestician's run-scoring single in the third.

The Mountain Cats came right back to regain the lead with three runs in the fourth.  Pitt-Johnstown put runners on first and second with one out and Fox delivered a two-run double that scored Radvan and Hannah Gnibus.  Mooney followed with a RBI double of her own that put the Mountain Cats on top, 4-2.

After each team produced a run in the fifth inning, the Bald Eagles cut it to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

However, Radvan got that run right back with a solo homer to left-center to lead off the Mountain Cats sixth, and Fox added her second RBI double of the game that put Pitt-Johnstown in front for good.  Miehl then doubled home Fox to make it 8-4.

Mountain Cat starter Mia Smith allowed two runs in the seventh, but was able to work out of the jam to close out the complete-game win.  Smith, now 4-2, surrendered six runs (5 earned) on seven hits in seven innings in the circle.

Mooney was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Radvan went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, three RBI and two runs to lead Pitt-Johnstown's offensive attack.  Fox added two doubles and three RBI, while Jenna Tallman singled and doubled and Santiago and Flowers each had two hits.

With the split, Lock Haven is now 10-8.

Friday's Pitt-Johnstown PSAC West doubleheader against Edinboro has been moved to Sunday due to weather.  Game times are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. at V.E. Erickson Complex.
