Mountain Cats split home doubleheader with Gannon

Johnstown, PA

Pitt-Johnstown fell behind Gannon 7-3 in the top of the seventh, but roared back in the bottom half of the final frame to collect an 8-7 win in unusual fashion in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday. The Mountain Cats could not mount a similar rally in a 13-4 setback in game two.

The Mountain Cats sit at 8-13 overall and are off to a 2-2 start in the PSAC West after also splitting a pair of games with the Golden Knights in Erie on Friday.

With the bases loaded and two outs, a wild pitch by Gannon's Matt Graeber chased home Josh Reynolds from third to knot game one at 7-all. That was followed by an intentional walk to Dylan Broderick that reloaded the bases for Josh Ulery, who picked up the game-winning RBI after getting hit by a pitch to allow Mario Disso to stroll home.

Ulery began the rally in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single up the middle and Erik Rhodes followed with a single to put two on with no outs. Asher Corl made the Golden Knights pay with a three-run homer to center field to pull the Mountain Cats within one at 7-6.

A one-out single by Reynolds preceded Disso being hit by a pitch to put the tying run into scoring position. After a flyout, Jake Ansell drew a crucial walk after running the count full to set up the uncommon ending.

Ulery had an exceptional first game, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI triple and a run scored. Rhodes went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run. Ansell reached safely three times and scored twice.

Pitt-Johnstown starter Seth Shuey gave up three earned runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work. Garrett Holzapfel allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts in two innings, but notched the victory to even his record to 1-1.

Graeber suffered the loss for the Golden Knights after being tagged for five runs on four hits with two walks in just two-thirds of an inning. Graeber was relieved by Carson Whiteman, who plunked Ulery with the first pitch he threw to end the game.

The Golden Knights wasted no time redeeming themselves early on in game two. Gannon sent 11 men to the plate and notched seven runs on four hits to take a 7-0 lead after just a half inning.

Gannon tacked on two more in the third and led 9-0 before Pitt-Johnstown responded with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning. Still, the six-run lead was more than enough for the quartet of Gannon hurlers that combined to give up just three earned runs on five hits to pair with five strikeouts and four walks.

Freshman starter Owen Tomb suffered the loss for the Mountain Cats after surrendering five runs on two hits with two walks.

Ansell had two hits and scored a run for Pitt-Johnstown, which also received singles from Broderick, Ulery and Justin Turcovski.

The Mountain Cats welcome Seton Hill to Point Stadium for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
