The Pitt-Johnstown softball team suffered a 9-1 loss in five innings in game one and fell 13-5 in game two in a pair of matchups with Seton Hill at the SHU Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Cats dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC West.
The first game largely turned in the Griffins' favor from the onset as they batted around, collecting six hits to go up 5-0 after just one inning.
Seton Hill ace Lauren Dellett (8-2) had everything going for her in the circle, surrendering just one run on three hits to pair with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
She helped her own cause by going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run to make it 9-0 in the fourth and a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Nina Grandey went 3-for-3, stole two bases and scored twice for the Griffins, who improved to 13-7 (6-0 PSAC).
The Mountain Cats broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth when Brynnae Coe fouled out to right field to bring home Maddie Flowers, who tripled to lead off the frame.
Emilia Santiago and Laura Fox each notched singles for Pitt-Johnstown. Tori Radvan (2-4) took the loss in the circle for the Mountain Cats.
After trailing 1-0 after one inning in game two, Pitt-Johnstown responded with two in the second and one in the third to take a 3-2 advantage.
Audrey Paterson doubled with one out and Flowers singled and stole second base to put the Mountain Cats in business. A sac-fly by Radvan scored Paterson and Mia Smith drilled a single to score Flowers.
Santiago led off the third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Jenna Tallman.
But the Griffins answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning by sending 10 hitters to the plate and scoring five runs on just two hits to take the lead back for good. Seton Hill scored one in the fourth, two in the fifth and posted a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
Mackenzie Zang and Grandey each tallied three hits for the Griffins, who racked up 14 in all.
Fox connected on a two-run home run in the top of the fifth for the Mountain Cats. Hannah Gnibus had a hit and scored a run. Mia Smith gave up nine earned runs, struck out four and walked three as she went the distance and suffered the loss for the Mountain Cats.
Chloe Elliott picked up the win for the Griffins, throwing five innings and giving up five runs on seven hits to pair with six strikeouts.
