Asher Corl banged out four hits and drove in three, but Mercyhurst was able to outslug Pitt-Johnstown, 10-6, in Saturday's PSAC West opener at Point Stadium, before completing the sweep with a 3-0 win in the nightcap. The Mountain Cats slipped to 13-23 overall and 6-10 in conference-play.
In the opener, Mercyhurst jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead off of Pitt-Johnstown starter
Seth Shuey.
The Mountain Cats answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the first.
Mario Disso's RBI single to right scored
Dylan Broderick, before Corl's three-run double cleared the bases to put Pitt-Johnstown on top, 4-3.
After a 30-minute rain delay, the Lakers scored five more in the top of the second, but Disso's Sacrifice fly and
Josh Ulery's RBI single in the bottom of the inning cut it to 8-6.
It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Mercyhurst increased its lead to 10-6 with a pair of runs. Lakers' starter Aiden Kelly was able to set the Mountain Cats down in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the complete-game victory.
Ulery went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Broderick had two hits, including a triple and two runs to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Corl drove in three, and Disso drove in a pair.
Shuey took the loss and fell to 1-5 after surrendering five runs on five hits in one-plus innings.
Garrett Holzapfel gave up five runs (3 earned) on four hits over the next 5.2 innings.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Mercyhurst loaded the bases off of Mountain Cat starter
Devon Boyles and came away with three runs.
Neither team scored after that and the Lakers went on to the 3-0 win.
After Boyles gave up the three runs in the second, freshman left-hander
Ben Tomb came in and shut the Lakers down. Tomb tossed the final five scoreless innings, allowed just two hits, and fanned a career-high nine hitters.
However, Mercyhurst starter Corbin Foy was just as dominant. Foy pitched the complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and striking out eight.
Corl added three more hits, including a double, and
Jake Ansell accounted for the other Pitt-Johnstown hit.
The Lakers are now 20-9 overall and 14-2 in the PSAC West.
The Mountain Cats will host a non-conference game against Shippensburg on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Point Stadium, before beginning a four-game PSAC West series against Indiana (PA) with a doubleheader at Point Stadium on Friday.
