Seton Hill Earns Four-Set PSAC West Win Over Mountain Cats

Alvarado, LualisLualis Alvarado's team-high 14 kills led three Mountain Cats who finished in double figures in kills, but Seton Hill won the first two sets and went on to a four-set PSAC West victory over the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team, Friday evening in Greensburg.  The Mountain Cats slipped to 14-3 overall and 2-2 in conference-play.
 
The Griffins took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-18.  Pitt-Johnstown came back with a 25-17 win to stay alive, but Seton Hill clawed back from a late deficit to close out the match with another 25-23 win.
 
The Mountain Cat got off to a quick start and built an 11-7 lead midway through the first set on an Adiamar Beaz kill and a Seton Hill attack error.  The Griffins kept it close and knotted at 13 and 17, before Alvarado's kill and another attack error put Pitt-Johnstown on top, 20-17.  The Griffins answered again behind Catie Flohr's seven first set kills and outscored the Mountain Cats, 8-3, down the stretch to hold on for a 25-23 win.
 
Seton Hill held the momentum and raced out to a 10-2 lead in the second set on Elizabeth Kolkowski's kill.  Mallory Pinske and Alvarado combined for five kills in a 9-4 Mountain Cat run that cut it to 14-11, but the Griffins pushed it out to 21-13.  The Mountain Cats tried to get back in it and got another kill from Beaz to narrow it to 22-18, before Seton Hill scored the final three points to take a 2-sets-to-none advantage with a 25-18 victory.
 
Pinske, MalloryZuro, EllieFacing elimination in the third set, Pitt-Johnstown scored the first four points and climbed out to an 11-5 led on three straight kills from Ellie ZuroDannika Susko's block extended it to 17-9 and the Mountain Cats never let the Griffins get closer that five on their way to a 25-17 win on Beaz's service ace.
 
Neither team was able to hold a lead larger than two in the fourth set until Seton Hill got three kills from Flohr and one from Paige Cole to erase a one-point deficit to take a 12-9 lead.  Two kills from Lippincott and one from Pinske quickly closed out a 6-1 Mountain Cat run that gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown.  After Beaz's ace made it 21-17, the Griffins stormed back and scored eight of the last 10 points to secure the 25-23 victory on kills from Ella Deeter and Cole.
 
Pinske's 11 kills and four blocks and Zuro's 11 kills gave the three Mountain Cats players with 10 or more kills, while, Lippincott finished with nine kills, and Susko added seven kills and four blocks.
 
Beaz had four kills, 21 digs, and match-highs of 46 set assists and four aces, and Gabriella DeRenzo tallied a match-best 28 digs and three assists.  The Mountain Cats also got eight digs from Jessica Krug and seven digs from Karin Ilagan.
 
Cole's match-high 24 kills, 13 digs, and two blocks, and Flohr's 18 kills and four blocks paced Seton Hill, now 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown continues a stretch of five consecutive PSAC West road matches at California (PA) on Saturday and at Indiana (PA) on Tuesday.  The Mountain Cats will play their next home match on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when Shippensburg visits the Sports Center.
