


In one of NCAA Division II's toughest in-season tournaments, first-year Head Coach
Tyler Reinhart and his Mountain Cat wrestling team sent a pair of wrestlers to the quarterfinals and five others advanced to Sunday's action at the 45
th Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. In the end,
Isaiah Vance, the 2023 Midwest Champion at 285 lbs., placed third in 2024, while
Trevon Gray (125 lbs.) and
Cooper Warshel both earned eighth-place finishes to help Pitt-Johnstown close out the tournament 11
th in the field of 43 teams.
Wisconsin-Parkside claimed the team championship with 147.0 points, 12 points better than second-place Central Oklahoma. Glenville State (WV) was third (127.0 points), and McKendree (IL) (102.5 points) and Tiffin (OH) (94.5 points) rounded out the Top-five. The Mountain Cats were 11
th with 72.0 points.
At 285 lbs., fifth-ranked Vance, coasted into the semifinals with first period falls over Western Colorado's Riley Dean-Butt at 1:29 and Emmanuel's Jacob King at 1L57 and a 17-6 major decision victory over former teammate
Oggie Atwood (UNC-Pembroke) in the third round. Maryville's No. 8-ranked Ryan Herman pinned Vance, ranked fifth nationally, at 4:24 in the quarters, forcing him into the consolation bracket where he pinned No. 11 Layton Schmick (East Stroudsburg) at 5:31. Vance followed that with a fall at 2:04 over No. 14 Colby Whitehill and a 15-0 technical fall at 3:18 over No. 7 Lloyd Reynolds (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the consolation semifinals to punch his ticket into the third-place match. Vance clinched his third-place finish with a 9-4 decision over No. 12-ranked Jake Swirple (Minot State).
At 125 lbs., Gray, ranked ninth nationally, earned a first-round bye, then won by technical fall in his opening bout, before suffering a lost in the third round. Gray bounced back with a technical fall win in the fourth round of the consolations and wins over No. 14 Luke Acuna (Ashland) and No. No, 4 Shane Corrigan (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the next two rounds to advance to the consolation quarterfinals where he fell to sixth-ranked Studd Morris, 10-4. Gray then lost by technical fall, 15-0 at 4:31 to Hunter Jacobsen (Chadron State) in the seventh-place match.
At 157 lbs.,
Cooper Warshel started then tournament with technical fall and decision wins, before falling, 4-1 in sudden victory to No. 16 Jake Nicolosi (Mount Olive) I the third round. Warshel responded by defeating Dalton Schams (upper Iowa), Noah Roulo (Lander), and No. 5 Casey Barnett (Tiffin) to secure a spot in the consolation quarterfinals, a Major decision loss to 13
th-ranked John Ridle (Central Missouri) sent Warshel to the seventh-place match where he placed eighth after a 5-0 decision loss to Colorado School of Mines' Marcus Caro.
At 197 lbs., No. 6
Dakoda Rodgers dealt Matthew Richardson (East Stroudsburg) an 18-2 technical fall loss at 5:11 and held off Kaine Morris (Ashland), 1-0 to lock down a spot in Sunday's quarterfinals. However, Rodgers was forced to medical forfeit in the quarterfinals and consolation round.
At 133 lbs.,
Tyson Cook posted a 3-2 record with a technical fall, a decision, and a fall over Adam Concepcion (Adams State) at 4:48 in the fourth round of the consolations, before being eliminated with a 23-6 loss to 20
th-ranked Oran Huff (Colorado Mesa) in the fifth round of the consolations.
At 141 lbs., No. 18
Macon Myers had a bye to start and won by decision over Brock Christian (Gannon) in the second round. After a tight, 2-1, loss to Ashland's Brock Durbin in the third round, Myers bounced back with consolation wins over Bret Minnick (Tiffin) and Sabian Russell (Quincy), before falling to Northern State's 20
th-ranked Braydon Mogle in the sixth round of the consolations.
At 165 lbs.
Gavyn Beck got a first round bye and suffered a 6-3 loss to Kutztown's No. 7-ranked Bailey Gimbor in the second round. Following a bye in the consolations, Beck won by medial forfeit and dealt 10
th-ranked Nick Coreno (Gannon) a 17-3 major decision loss in the fourth round of the consolations, but fell to Montevallo's Jakob Chisholm, 16-11, in the fifth round of the consolations and finished at 2-2.
