
M'laya Ainsworth scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds and
Riley Childress added nine points, six rebounds, and five assists, but Glenville State, the 2021-22 NCAA Division II National Champions, used relentless pressure to climb out to a double-digit halftime lead in an 87-49 non-conference victory over the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team, Monday afternoon in Glenville, W.Va. The Mountain Cats slipped to 1-7 with the loss.
Along with Ainsworth and Childress,
Camille Dominick scored seven points,
Hayden Keith had five points, and
Belle Bosch chipped-in five points for Pitt-Johnstown. Freshmen
Kate Myers and
Sophia Ott each collected career-highs with seven and six rebounds, respectively.
After falling behind 8-0 to start, Pitt-Johnstown responded with 10 unanswered points over the next four minutes, including three straight from Bosch and a free-throw from Dominick, to go in front 10-8. Glenville State got the lead back out to seven and took a 21-15 lead into the second quarter on a pair of Nwando Okigbo free-throws.
The Pioneers came out hot and hit their first four shots to ignite a 15-4 run that extended the lead to 36-19 on Tynasia Bunting's conventional 3-point play. A 3-pointer from Childress and a jumper from
Sophia Ott got the Mountain Cats back to with a dozen at the 4:45 mark, but Glenville State, who knocked down six of their nine first half 3-pointers in the quarter, regained control and scored the final 13 points to build a 49-24 halftime advantage.
The Mountain Cats came out in the second half and got a bucket from Ainsworth to get to down to 21, and another 3-pointer from Childress with 4:00 left in the third quarter to make it 58-38, but Bunting's late layup closed out the quarter and gave the Pioneers a 64-41 lead.
However, Glenville State, which held a 41-16 advantage in points off turnovers, kept the pressure on and increased the lead to 73-43 early in the final quarter and went on to the victory.
Bunting finished with a game-high 21 points, while Okigbo had 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Dream Cherry added 16 points for the Pioneers, now 6-2.
Pitt-Johnstown will travel to PSAC Crossover games at Shippensburg on Friday at Millersville on Saturday. The Mountain Cats will host a conference crossover doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against West Chester on Dec. 17 in the Sports Center.
