Pitt-Johnstown exploded for a combined nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings, providing more than enough offense to carry the day in a 10-6 victory over Salem (WV) in the first of two games on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mountain Cats moved to 2-5 on the year behind Mia Smith, who threw her second complete game in as many days to earn the win in the circle. She gave up six runs, only three earned, on 11 hits and struck out four.
Smith also scored a run and contributed two hits, including an RBI triple in the second inning that tied the game at 1-all. Julia Mooney had a pair of hits and scored once. Meghan McDonough added two hits, including an RBI single.
A game that was tied 1-1 heading to the fourth quickly turned in the Mountain Cats' favor. The game-altering rally began when Tori Radvan walked with one out. Sydney Mitchell came on as a pinch-runner for Radvan and moved to third when Smith singled one batter later. Audrey Paterson walked to load the bases.
Senior Shaylin Hagerman delivered the biggest blow to the Tigers with a three-RBI double to clear the bases and make it 4-1. Jenna Tallman capped the frame with an RBI single to score Hagerman.
After leaving two runners stranded in the bottom of the inning, the Mountain Cats tacked on five more runs on four hits in the fifth.Â
Mooney kicked off the inning with a single and moved to third after Kayla Miehl drew a walk and Radvan singled. Mooney came around to score on an error, and Paterson's two-RBI triple scored Radvan and pinch-runner Krista Brunson. Paterson crossed home on a wild pitch, and McDonough's RBI single increased the lead to 10-1.
The Mountain Cats will have Wednesday off before playing two games on Thursday starting at 10:15 a.m. against Lewis (IL) followed by a matchup with Northern State (SD) at 3:15 p.m.
