Pitt-Johnstown was limited to three hits in a 6-2 setback to Northern State (SD) in the second of two spring games on Thursday afternoon.
Ailah Charles went 2-for-3 to lead the way for the Mountain Cats, who slipped to 3-7 on the season.
Sophomore Mia Smith earned the start in the circle and gave up two earned runs on four hits in three innings of work. Addison Hilligsberg suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits in three innings. The freshman struck out three and walked one.
Northern State scored a pair of runs on three hits in its half of the third inning. The Wolves added what ended up being a critical run on three hits in the fifth.
The Mountain Cats cut into that lead one inning later. Isabella DePalma and Kayla Miehl walked to lead off the sixth. After a strikeout and a groundout, Julia Mooney was subbed in to pinch-hit for Jenna Tallman. In her only at-bat of the game, Mooney smacked a 2-run single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But the Wolves again extended their lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame to cap the scoring. The Mountain Cats went down in order in the seventh to end it.
The Mountain Cats will wrap up their weeklong Florida trip at The Spring Games on Friday with a back-to-back doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. against American International (MA) followed by a meeting with Bentley (MA) at 11:30 a.m.
