Pitt-Johnstown took a one-run advantage into the seventh inning, but could not make it stand up as Lewis (IL) forced extra innings and eventually dealt the Mountain Cats a 9-4 loss in eight innings in the first of two spring games on Thursday.
The Mountain Cats had their three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 3-6 on the year.
Senior pitcher Julie Shinavski was charged with the loss after throwing 6.2 innings, giving up eight runs—six earned—on 10 hits. To her credit, she surrendered just one run on five hits over the first six innings.
Seven different players had a hit for the Mountain Cats, who grabbed a quick 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the first when Julia Mooney smacked an opposite-field home run. That remained the score until the Flyers posted a leadoff double in their half of the fourth and took advantage of a fielding error to knot the game at 1-all.
Kayla Miehl launched a solo home run to straight away center field to provide the Mountain Cats with a 2-1 lead and a chance to close it out. But Lewis again responded with a run on back-to-back hits. Shaylin Hagerman singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded.
With the international tiebreaker rules in place, the Flyers notched seven runs on seven hits, including a momentum-swinging 3-run home run.
Pinch-runner Emma DiStefano moved to third on Meghan McDonough's single and later scored when Tori Radvan reached on a fielding error. Izzy DePalma's single brought home McDonough to set the final.
The Mountain Cats will wrap up their weeklong Florida trip at The Spring Games on Friday with a back-to-back doubleheader starting at 9 a.m. against American International (MA) followed by a meeting with Bentley (MA) at 11:30 a.m.
