Pitt-Johnstown endured a less than ideal start and committed six errors in a narrow 13-10 loss to Clarion in the opener. The Mountain Cats couldn't avoid a four-game sweep in game two after being handed a weather-shortened 6-0 defeat in the nightcap of a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium Complex.
The Mountain Cats dropped to 13-22 overall with a 4-12 mark in the conference. The Golden Eagles are now 10-24 and 6-10 in the PSAC West.
Clarion scored five runs on five hits with the help of an error in the first off starter Seth Shuey to grab a lead it would never let slip away. Shuey was tagged with the loss, giving up nine runs, seven earned, on 10 hits over three innings of work.
The Mountain Cats faced a six-run deficit on two separate occasions before methodically scratching back into the game. It was 9-3 in the fourth when Justin Turcovski led off with a double and was singled home by Garrett Prosper to make it 9-4.
Aidan Steinbugl walked and Nathan Helms singled to move Prosper to third before he was tagged out at home trying to score on Erik Rhodes' flyout to left. Alex Glumac followed with an infield single and Steinbugl cut the deficit to 9-5 when he came around on an error.
Alex Ebeling slapped an RBI single that tightened it to 9-6. The Mountain Cats then climbed back to within two on Turcovski's two-run home run after Devon Boyles walked to lead off the fifth.
But the Golden Eagles had the answer in the bottom of the inning, posting four crucial runs on three hits with the assistance of two errors to go up 13-8. Turcovski's two-RBI single in the sixth that scored Ulery and Ebeling became the last hit over the final two innings for the Mountain Cats.
After the two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first three innings of game two, Clarion broke the game open with four runs on five hits in the fourth.
It would prove to be insurmountable for the Mountain Cats, who managed just three hits off Clarion starter Ryan Gallagher. Lucas Muffie recorded a double and Ulery and Ebeling each had a single.
Brandon Clifford suffered the loss for the Mountain Cats after surrendering four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3.2 innings. Erik Rhodes gave up two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings in relief before the game was called due to the impending storm after six complete innings.
Pitt-Johnstown will host Lock Haven in a non-division contest on Tuesday with first pitch from Point Stadium set for 2 p.m.
