Pitt-Johnstown men's golf kicked off what hopes to be an annual tradition when the program hosted an invitational for the first time ever on Monday and Tuesday at the Bedford Springs Old Course at Omni Bedford Springs Resort.
The Mountain Cats made it even more memorable by capturing the championship with a 606 (+30) over 36 holes, marking the first Division II team victory in program history. Mauricio Hernandez hoisted the individual title with a 143 (-1) over two rounds and etched his name in program history on several fronts in the process.
He became the university's first Division II Individual Champion and tied the record for the lowest 36-hole total in history. His first round 69 (-3) was the second lowest individual round ever for a Pitt-Johnstown competitor. He shot a 74 (+2) in round two to seal the title by three strokes over runner-up finisher Markus Pierre of UMass Amherst.
Similarly, the Mountain Cats seized the title by three strokes over Indiana (Pa.) to score their second ever team win. The other victory came in the 2009-10 season at Penn State Altoona.
Eli Ropietski remained consistent, registering another top 10 performance with a 154 (+10) to finish tied for eighth. Justin Scally wasn't far off that pace after recording a 156 (+12) that locked him into a tie for 11th place. Ethan Webb shot a 157 (+13) to take 14th place. Parker Hilchey and Tyler Mocello each carded a 159 (+15) to tie four other players for 16th place.
Mario Battaglia checked in at 26th with a 164 (+20). Sal Cerrili rounded out the lineup with a 178 (+34) to tie himself for 40th.
Pitt-Johnstown will now await a possible bid into the 2024 NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Region Golf Championships that are set for May 9-11 in Wheeling, W.Va.
