Mountain Cats Kick-Off 2024 Campaign With Tight, 2-0, Setback to Shepherd

Windber, PA

Shepherd (WV) scored a goal 20 minutes into the match, then added an insurance goal with under nine minutes to play to deal the Pitt-Johnstown men's soccer team a 2-0 non-conference setback in Saturday's 2024 season-opener at Windber High School.

The Rams jumped out to a quick lead when Asong Nkemanjong headed Ryan Fisher's throw-in by Mountain Cat goalkeeper PJ Derksen in the 20th minute.

Neither team was able to score until Ryan Fisher gave Shepherd an insurance goal in the 81st minute that set the final at 2-0.

Derksen faced 15 shots from the Rams, made five saves, but allowed a pair of goals in the loss.  Shepherd's Aidan Houck was forced to make one save on six Mountain Cat shots to earn the shutout in net.

The Rams are now 1-0-1 to start the year.

The Mountain Cats will travel to Penn State-New Kensington for a non-conference match on Tuesday, before visiting Goldey-Beacom (DE) for another non-conference match next Saturday.
