Pitt-Johnstown put up an admirable fight before falling to nationally ranked Seton Hill in a 76-67 loss on Wednesday evening at the Sports Center.
Despite recovering from a lackluster first quarter, the Mountain Cats dropped to 2-18 (0-13 PSAC). The Griffins, who came in ranked 10th in the WBCA Coaches Poll and 13th in the D2CSC poll, improved to 18-2 (12-1 PSAC).
Freshman Lydia Miller enjoyed her first career double-double with season-highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds. She was also 4-for-4 at the free-throw line and added four steals and a pair of assists. Belle Bosch provided 11 points, six rebounds and four steals.
M'laya Ainsworth contributed 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Camille Dominick added nine points, while Riley Childress supplied eight points and a game-high six assists.
The Mountain Cats applied plenty of pressure throughout the early stages of the second half and tied the game on two separate occasions. Dominick's layup at the 6:04 mark of the third quarter tied the game at 43-all. Nearly a minute later, Ainsworth connected on a jumper that knotted it at 45.
But it marked the last time the contest was tied as Seton Hill rattled off the next nine points and held on over the final 16 minutes.
Pitt-Johnstown responded with six straight points that were punctuated by two free throws from Miller to trim the deficit to three with 17 seconds left in the third. The Griffins led 57-51 heading into the fourth.
The Mountain Cats never faded away despite trailing 9-0 to open the game. They forced a season-high 27 turnovers and turned those into 27 points.
After a cold shooting start, the Mountain Cats bounced back to start the second as six different players helped them go 8-for-17 from the field. Childress connected on two free throws with 10 seconds left in the half as Pitt-Johnstown went into the locker room down 35-30.
Hallie Cowan recorded a game-high 18 points, while her sister Helene Cowan added 17 for the Griffins.
The Mountain Cats will have a week off before hosting Clarion on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
