For a second time in the last three matches, the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team clawed back from the brink to capture a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Edinboro on Friday night. Set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-20 and 15-8.
Ellie Zuro Cirino notched a new career-high of 22 kills to give the Mountain Cats their fifth straight win to improve to 11-3 (2-0 PSAC) on the year. The senior also provided 16 digs and three blocks defensively.
Mallory Pinske collected a match-high six blocks and a team-high three service aces. Caroline Knight swatted 14 kills to pair with eight digs. Natalie Lippincott pitched in another eight kills.
Abby Berry passed out a match-high 44 assists, while Jessica Krug recorded a match-high 21 kills.
Pitt-Johnstown never trailed in the deciding set after getting off to a 3-0 start thanks to kills from Zuro, Dannika Susko and Berry. The lead was 7-5 before Knight connected on three straight kills to make it 10-5. Two kills apiece from Zuro and Pinske helped the Mountain Cats seal it.
Down 2-1 in the match, the Mountain Cats had their backs against the wall facing a 6-0 deficit to begin the fourth frame. They promptly responded on the defensive end, forcing five Edinboro attack errors during a 8-1 run that gave them their first lead.
They would eventually fall into a 17-14 hole before back-to-back service aces from Pinske during a 4-0 run swung the momentum back. It was all tied at 19 when the Mountain Cats went on another crucial 4-0 flurry to take a 23-19 edge. A kill from Knight and an ace from Krug tied the match at 2-all.
Those two sets preceded a back-and-forth opening set that allowed Pitt-Johnstown to go up 1-0. Tied at 20-all, the Mountain Cats rattled off five of the final six points with the help of kills from Zuro and Lippincott to close it out.
Pitt-Johnstown visits Gannon on Saturday, Oct. 4 for a 2 p.m. matchup.
