Baden Forup collected his second straight double with 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, and
Jay Rose added a game-high 20 points off the bench to lead a balanced Pitt-Johnstown attack that saw all eight players with significant minutes score at least seven points in a dominating, 92-71, non-conference win at Davis & Elkins, Saturday afternoon in Elkins, W.Va.
Â
Along with Forup and Rose,
Cedric Rault tallied 11 points, while
Vinnie Cugini scored all 10 of his points in the first half for the Mountain Cats, now 4-2.Â
Nick Watts (7 rebounds) and
Will Kromka (6 rebounds) each finished with nine points,
Adam Bilinsky had eight points, and freshman
Ryan Calo tallied seven points and a career-high seven boards.
Â
In a first half full of runs, Cugini scored eight straight points ahead of Forup's put-back capped a 10-0 Pitt-Johnstown run that gave the Mountain Cats an 18-12 advantage seven minutes into the game.
Â
Davis & Elkins came right back and used 3-pointers from Matthew Gray and Dontrell Jenkins to close a 10-0 run of its own to retake the lead, but the Mountain Cats, who shot 48% and held the Senators to just 39% in the opening 20 minutes, took control and outscored Davis & Elkins, 18-5, over the next five minutes to build a nine-point advantage.
Â
Rose's 3-pointer, followed by five points from Watts ignited the run, before Bilinsky's bucket in the paint put Pitt-Johnstown on top, 36-27, at the 4-minute mark.
Â
The Senators closed the gap to four, but three more of Rose's 14 first half points as time expired gave the Mountain Cats a 43-36 halftime lead.
Â
Pitt-Johnstown hit eight of its first 12 shots to begin the second half and got a driving layup from Rault and a 3-pointer from Kromka at 16:24 to push it into double figures at 56-44.
Â
The Mountain Cats pulled away and never let Davis & Elkins get closer than nine the rest of the way.
Â
Baskets from Watts and Rault midway through the half extended it to 75-55, and Pitt-Johnstown cruised to the 21-point victory.
Â
The Mountain Cats, who outrebounded the Senators, 44-35, held a 58-38 advantage in points in the paint and outscored Davis & Elkins, 20-9 in points off turnovers.
Â
Pitt-Johnstown improved its first half shooting to 54.4% in the second half and ended the game at 50.7% 37-73), while limiting the Senators to just 36.8% (28-76) shooting for the game. The Mountain Cats knocked down five 3-pointers and hit 13-15 from the line. Davis & Elkins was 9-9 from the charity stripe.
Â
Vegan Evans' 12 points and Gray's 11 points paced four senators who scored in double figures.
Â
With the loss, Davis & Elkins fell to 2-4.
Â
Pitt-Johnstown returns home to host a non-conference game against Penn State-Greater Allegheny, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before beginning PSAC Crossover-play at West Chester on Saturday.
