Mountain Cats claw past Slippery Rock in double OT for first PSAC win

Bosch, BellePitt-Johnstown capitalized on its opportunities down the stretch to outlast Slippery Rock 69-67 in double overtime to earn its first PSAC victory of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center.

The Mountain Cats improved to 3-21 (1-16 PSAC) in front of a host of alumni and family members who were in attendance for the university's Winterfest Weekend celebration.

Sophomore Belle Bosch racked up 15 points, which included a 7-for-8 performance from the free-throw line. She also pulled down seven rebounds before fouling out at the 3:24 mark of the first overtime period.

Junior Riley Childress also tallied 15 points and contributed five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Freshman Gianna Gallucci added 13 points, including five in the second overtime period that helped decide the outcome. Lexi Margolis, who played a game-high 45 minutes, contributed 10 points, a team-highs of eight rebounds and six assists.

Gallucci, GiannaGallucci kicked off the double overtime with a clutch 3-pointer that gave Pitt-Johnstown a 62-59 lead. The Mountain Cats took a 66-61 lead, their largest of the game, less than two minutes later on two free throws from Camille Dominick.

In a contest that featured 12 lead changes and eight ties, the Mountain Cats would not be denied in the closing seconds despite being down by one with 54 seconds left.

Down 67-66, Gallucci connected on a clutch layup that allowed Pitt-Johnstown to seize a 68-67 advantage that never faded away.

Following a steal from Gallucci, Childress extended the lead to two with 13 seconds left before Dominick blocked a jumper from Slippery Rock's Kayle Joseph-Bernard in the final seconds to slam the door shut.

The Mountain Cats had to claw back in the fourth to even reach overtime. After being down by five with eight minutes left in regulation, Lexi Margolis put the Mountain Cats up 47-46 with about four minutes left. 

Childress, RileyM'laya Ainsworth, who chipped in nine points and five rebounds, hit a layup with 90 seconds left that broke a 51-all tie. But Slippery Rock tied it just 15 seconds later. Childress had a chance to win it in the final seconds, but her floater was just off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Pitt-Johnstown limited Slippery Rock to just 2-of-17 from the field and held a narrow 11-8 lead after the opening quarter. Bosch capped the second quarter scoring with two free throws as the Mountain Cats went into the break up 21-20.

The Mountain Cats shot 41.7% (25-of-60) from the field and were 73% from the free-throw line (16-for-22). They finished with a 43-39 rebounding advantage and a 38-28 edge in the paint, both of which were instrumental in the final minutes.

Slippery Rock finished 35.3% (24-of-68) from the floor and 86% (12-of-14) at the charity stripe. Anye Washington recorded a game-high 18 points in 34 minutes off the bench for the Rock, which dropped to 7-16 (4-13 PSAC).

Pitt-Johnstown visits California (Pa.) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
