Mountain Cats sweep Bloomsburg to secure series victory

Johnstown, Pa.

Pitt-Johnstown received two stellar pitching performances that led to a 6-3 victory in game one and a walkoff 3-2 win in game two to sweep a doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon at Point Stadium.

The Mountain Cats improved to 7-9 overall less than a week before opening conference play.

Game One—Pitt-Johnstown 6, Bloomsburg 3

Ben Tomb (2-1) earned the game one victory on the mound by throwing six innings, giving up just one run on four hits with four strikeouts compared to three walks.

Calvin Iseminger went 3-for-3 and scored a run to lead the offense in the opening contest.

Brody Roberts and Justin Turcovski singled to put two on with one out in the first before Erik Rhodes came up clutch with a two-out, two-RBI single that put the Mountain Cats up 2-0 after one.

After the Huskies cut that deficit in half in the third, Iseminger singled with one out in the fourth before scoring on Aidan Steinbugl's RBI triple. Steinbugl came around to make it 4-1 on Cam Donaldson's sac fly.

Turcovski tripled with one out in the fifth and scored on an RBI double courtesy of Devon Boyles. He scored one batter later on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-1. The five-run cushion was more than enough to withstand a pair of runs from Bloomsburg in the seventh. Luke Lea gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in one inning of relief.

Game Two—Pitt-Johnstown 3, Bloomsburg 2

The nightcap featured just seven combined hits between the two teams. That was in large part because of Brian Pirone, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning with the Mountain Cats holding a 2-0 lead.

However, Bloomsburg's Josh Wilson ended Pirone's day and tied the game with a two-run home run with one out in the seventh. It was the only hit Pirone gave up on the afternoon as he finished with seven strikeouts compared to just one walk.

Despite coming on and giving up a single, Rhodes induced a ground-ball double play and picked up the win in relief.

Joey Maun, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, cracked a one-out double in Pitt-Johnstown's half of the seventh.

Tyler Danko reached on an error to put Maun in scoring position. Donaldson struck out, but the ball skirted away from Bloomsburg catcher Drew Balestrini and on the throw to first, Maun slid home safely to give the Mountain Cats the victory.

Nolan Walker was charged with the loss for the Huskies, who dropped to 7-9.

Pitt-Johnstown will get its first crack at PSAC play when it visits Slippery Rock on Friday, March 21 for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
