California (PA) Sweeps Mountain Cats With Pair of Walk-Off Wins

Mooney, JuliaJulia Mooney homered doubled, and drove in three, but California (PA) walked off with a 3-2 win in Tuesday's first game of a PSAC West doubleheader in California, before the Vulcans scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to complete the sweep with a 6-5 victory.
 
In the opener, Kaitlyn Achtermeier doubled with one out and scored on Jenna Hollerich's base hit to center to give Cal U a 1-0 lead after two innings.
 
The Mountain Cats, now 6-24 overall and 3-13 in conference-play, tied it in the top of the fourth on Mooney's fifth homerun of the season.
 
It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Pitt-Johnstown scratched out a run to take a 2-1 lead.  Mooney led off with a single to center.  Emma DiStefano entered the game as a pinch runner and came around to score on starting pitcher Mia Smith's RBI double to the gap in left-center.
 
Brunson, KristaHowever, the Vulcans put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and Brianna Sersevic delivered a two-run double down the left field line to lift Cal U to the 3-2 walk-off victory.
 
Mooney went 2-for-3 with a homer, while Smith had a double and an RBI, and Krista Brunson added a hit for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Smith took the tough loss after allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking three in 6.2 innings.
 
Vulcans' starter Taylor Babcock earned the win in a complete-game effort.  Babcock surrendered two runs on four hits.  She fanned eight and didn't allow a walk.
 
In game two, Sara Solberg reached on an error and Hannah Gnibus walked ahead of Mooney's two-run double to right-center that gave Pitt-Johnstown the lead in the top of the third.
 
Cal U answered to tie it in the bottom of the fourth on Carlena Fiorilli's two-run double down the left field line, but the Mountain Cats regained the lead with an unearned run in the top of the sixth.  Singles by Brunson, Audrey Paterson, and Brynnae Coe filled the bases with two outs, and a Vulcans' error allowed Brunson to score to make it 3-2.
 
Brunson's RBI double chased home pinch-runner McDonough, and McDonough scored on Cal U's fourth error of the game to give the Mountain Cats two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
 
The Vulcans battled back again.  This time Cal U scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh two walk it off for the second straight game.  Bailee Bertani's two-out, two-run single knotted it at five and, Mikayla Linkous' base hit up the middle plated Bertani to give the Vulcans the 6-5 victory.
 
Brunson singled, doubled, drove in one and scored one, and Mooney doubled and had two RBI to pace Pitt-Johnstown.  The Mountain Cats also got hits from Coe, Isabella DePalma, Solberg, and Smith.
 
Mahlon Yonkin took the loss for Pitt-Johnstown.  Yonkin gave up six runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings in the circle.
 
With the sweep, Cal U improved to 11-27 overall and 8-10 in the PSAC West.
 
The Mountain Cats visit Clarion for a PSAC West doubleheader on Wednesday, before celebrating Senior Day with a conference doubleheader against Edinboro, Friday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Softball Field.
