Mountain Cats Drop Two PSAC West Games at Indiana (PA)

Indiana, PA

Iseminger, CalvinPirone, BrianCalvin Iseminger hit a grand slam in the opener, then accounted for both Pitt-Johnstown Hits in the nightcap, but Indiana (PA) swept a PSAC West doubleheader from the Mountain Cats, 12-4 and 2-0, Friday afternoon in Indiana.  Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 13-28 overall and 4-18 in conference-play.

In game one, the Crimson Hawks climbed out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third off Aiden Coleman.  Ricardo Aponte's leadoff home run to left put IUP on top, before Mike Huber scored from third on a double steal and Camden Rhude's RBI double scored Peyton Johnson.

After IUP pushed it out to 7-0 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Mountain Cats loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and Iseminger belted grand slam to right to cut the deficit to 7-4.

The Crimson Hawks got two of those runs right back in the bottom of the frame, then added three more insurance runs in the sixth off Pitt-Johnstown reliever Garret Holzapfel on Aponte's three-run homer.

Zac LeGars and Karson Reffner each had two hits to go along with Iseminger's grand slam for Pitt-Johnstown.

Coleman slipped to 3-4 after surrendering six runs (5 earned) on seven hits over the first 3-plus innings.

IUP's Derrick Shields earned the win after going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, and Cameron Copple held the Mountain Cats scoreless on just one hit in 2.2 innings in relief.

Aponte went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI for the Crimson Hawks.

In game two, IUP took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Aponte's sacrifice fly and a Pitt-Johnstown throwing error, and that's all the Crimson Hawks would need in the 2-0 win.

Five IUP pitchers combined to hold the Mountain Cats scoreless on two hits, a pair of singles from Iseminger.

Brian Pirone took the tough loss and fell to 1-7 after giving up two runs (1 earned) on just two hits, while fanning nine and walking one.

With the sweep, the Crimson Hawks improved to 20-23 overall and 13-9 in the PSAC West.

Pitt-Johnstown will finish the four-game PSAC Western Division series against Indiana (PA) with a pair of games on Saturday at Point Stadium, before visiting Division I Kent State (OH) for a non-conference game, Tuesday evening.
