George Roberts Returns to Kent State, But Golden Flashes Down Mountain Cats

Kent, Ohio

Pitt-Johnstown Head Coach George Roberts made a return visit to his alma mater of Kent State.  Roberts, the 2012 Mid-America Conference Player of the Year for the Golden Flashes, and Mountain Cats took on Division I Kent State in a non-conference game, Tuesday evening.

Following a lengthy rain delay, the Golden Flashes jumped out to an early lead, then belted a pair of three run homeruns in the sixth inning on their way to a 12-2, seven-inning victory over the Mountain Cats.

In a pregame ceremony, Kent State presented Roberts with a framed No. 6 jersey to commemorate his accomplishments.
Roberts, also a 2012 Second-Team All-American, guided the Golden Flashes to a spot in the College World Series. In 2023, Kent State inducted him into the Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kent State opened up a 6-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third.

Turcovski, JustinRhodes, ErikPitt-Johnstown, now 13-31, answered with two runs in the top of the sixth.  Brody Roberts singled, stole second, and scored on Justin Turcovski's opposite field double to get the Mountain Cats on the board, and Erik Rhodes followed with a two-out base hit to left that chased home Turcovski.

However, three-run homers from Brody Williams and Landon Tiesing in the bottom of the frame broke it open and the Golden Flashes went on to the seven-inning victory.

Turcovski doubled and drove in one, while Rhodes had an RBI single, and Aidan Steinbugl and Roberts each had hits for Pitt-Johnstown.

Zyler Freedman took the loss for the Mountain Cats after allowing four runs on three hits over the first 1.2 innings.  Six Pitt-Johnstown pitchers saw action on the mound.

Ciaran Caughey picked up the win after holding the Mountain Cats scoreless on one hit, while fanning six over the first three innings.

With the win, Kent State improved to 29-14 on the year.

Pitt-Johnstown will finish the 2025 season with a PSAC Western Division series against California (PA).  The Mountain Cats will host the Vulcans for a pair of games on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium, before traveling to Washington, Pa. to close out the series on Friday.
