Baseball Splits Pair of PSAC Games With Nationally-Ranked Seton Hill

Johnstown, PA

LeGars, ZacTomb, BenAfter two narrow losses to No. 18/28 Seton Hill on Friday, Ben Tomb threw a complete game and Zac LeGars' RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Pitt-Johnstown to a 2-1 PSAC Western Division win over the Griffins in Sunday's opener of a doubleheader at Point Stadium.  The Griffins rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to get the split with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.  The Mountain Cats are now 8-21 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

In game one, Seton Hill scratched out an unearned run off Tomb in the top of the fourth and it stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, Devon Boyles reached on a Seton Hill throwing error and moved to second on Erik Rhodes infield single.  Aiden Steinbugl's RBI single chased Boyles home to knot it at one, before LeGars followed with a two-out single threw the right side that scored Steinbugl to give the Mountain Cats the, 2-1, walk-off win.

Tomb evened his record at 3-3 after limiting the Griffins to just one unearned run on three hits in a complete-game effort.  Tomb fanned eight and walked four.

Kunst, JimmyLeGars was 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI, while Steinbugl had a hit, drove in one and scored one for Pitt-Johnstown.

Seton Hill's Ian Korn took the loss after giving up two unearned runs on five hits in 6.2 innings.

In game two, Pitt-Johnstown scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.  The Mountain Cats loaded the bases and Brody Roberts scored on a walk to Rhodes, before Steinbugl's fielder's choice plated Alex Ebeling.

After Owen Henne's sacrifice fly in the top of the third got a run back for Seton Hill, neither team scored until the Griffins struck for three runs in the top of the seventh.

Seton Hill loaded the bases off Mountain Cat reliever Rhodes.  Zach Myers entered the game and walked Jack Whalen to force home the tying run and Henne's two-out, two run single allowed Austyn Winkelblech and Joe Fiedor to score to put the Griffins on top, 4-2.

Roberts led off the Pitt-Johnstown half of the seventh with a double, but Zach Herb was able to strand the runner to earn his fourth save of the year and preserve Seton Hill's win.

Rhodes (1-1) took the loss in relief of starter Jimmy Kunst after giving up three runs on one hit in 1.2 innings.  Kunst tossed five strong innings and held the Griffins to just one run on one hit, while striking out four and walking one in the no-decision.

Roberts went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, and Rhodes and Steinbugl each had an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.

With the split, Seton Hill is now 23-7 overall and 9-3 in the PSAC West.

The Mountain Cats go to Shippensburg for a non-conference game on Tuesday, before starting a four-game home-and home PSAC West series at Gannon on Friday.  The teams will complete the series with a doubleheader at Point Stadium on Saturday.
