Mountain Cats Rally for Comeback Victory at Shippensburg

Shippensburg, Pa.

Stover, CrusenIt took awhile for the bats to warm up, but Pitt-Johnstown eventually found enough footing to string together six late-inning runs to secure a 6-5 non-conference victory over Shippensburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Five different pitchers helped the Mountain Cats move to 9-21 overall. Despite surrendering two unearned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings, Roman Donis (1-1) was credited with the victory on the mound.

After starter Zyler Freedman tossed two scoreless innings, reliever Luke Lea ran into trouble in the third inning, giving up two earned runs on three hits.

That 2-0 deficit stood until the seventh inning when Nathan Helms led off with a walk. Calvin Iseminger singled to put two on, and back-to-back wild pitches allowed Helms to score and make it 2-1. Zac LeGars drew a walk before designated hitter Noah Donis slapped an RBI single to tie it at 2-all.

Crusen Stover kept the line moving with a single, and Cam Donaldson brought home LeGars with an RBI groundout to give Pitt-Johnstown a 3-2 advantage. The Raiders re-tied it with a home run off reliever McClain Flinn in their half of the seventh, but the Mountain Cats immediately responded.

Tyler Danko walked to start the eighth and moved up after Helms was hit by a pitch. Iseminger capitalized on those mistakes with an RBI base-hit that provided the Mountain Cats with a lead they never relinquished.

Following a Shippensburg pitching change, Helms crossed home thanks to an error on a bunt by Jacob Cramer and Iseminger made it 6-3 after scoring on a wild pitch one batter later.

Donis allowed a two-RBI single with two outs in the ninth, but got Shippensburg's Carter Arbuthnot to fly out to end the game.

While all seven of the Mountain Cats' hits were singles, they made the most of them. Iseminger, Donis and Stover all recorded two hits, and Karson Reffner had the other one.

Kyle Ausgotharp picked up three hits for the Raiders, who dropped to 19-13 overall. Brenden Anderson was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in one inning.

The Mountain Cats will visit Gannon on Friday for a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. They'll wrap the four-game series with two games at Point Stadium on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
