Baseball Splits Pair With Dominican Saturday Afternoon in North Carolina

Tomb, BenDonis, RomanThe Mountain Cats continued their weekend trip to the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC on Saturday and bounced back from a 10-7 setback in the opener against Dominican (NY) with a 6-3 win in the nightcap behind strong pitching from Ben Tomb and Roman Donis to get the split.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 6-5.
 
In game one, the Mountain Cats cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth on Lucas Muffie's sacrifice fly, but the Chargers answered with three in the in the top of the fifth and five more in the sixth to build a 10-1 lead.
 
Pitt-Johnstown battled back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, including Brody Roberts' three-run triple to the gap in right-center, but that was as close as it would get.
 
Roberts went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI, while Tyler Danko singled, tripled, and scored two runs for the Mountain Cats.
 
Jimmy Kunst took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over the first 4.2 innings.
 
In game two, Dominican jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, before Pitt-Johnstown erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. RBI singles from Jandel Maldonado, Alex Ebeling, and Calvin Iseminger knotted it at three, and Muffie followed two batters later with a base hit that scored Zac Legars and Iseminger to put to Mountain Cats on top, 5-3.
 
Pitt-Johnstown added one more run in the sixth on Ebeling's double that chased home Roberts to set the final at 6-3.
 
Tomb tossed the first 5.2 innings to pick up the win.  Tomb allowed three runs on six hits.  He fanned three and didn't allow a walk.  Roman Donis pitched the final 1.1 innings and limited Dominican to just on hit to earn the save.
 
Ebeling had two hits and two RBI, Muffie had a hit and drove in two, and Karson Reffer added two hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Dominican is now 1-2.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will conclude the weekend trip to Cary, NC with a game against and Pace (NY) on Sunday, before taking on Shepherd (WV) and Charleston (WV) next weekend in Shepherdstown, W.Va.
