Softball Suffers 7-0 and 4-1 Setbacks at No. 23 Shippensburg

Lupfer, TaylorYonkin, MahlonTaylor Lupfer went 4-for-5 with an RBI, but 23rd-ranked Shippensburg was able to hold off Pitt-Johnstown for a 7-0 and 4-1 non-conference doubleheader sweep, Tuesday afternoon in Shippensburg.  The Mountain Cats are now 3-4.
 
In game one, Shippensburg opened up a 2-0 lead after one inning off Mountain Cat starter Mia Smith on an RBI single from Brie Wilmot and a bases loaded walk to Emilee Sullivan.
 
The Red Raiders added more three runs in the bottom of the third, including Morgan Koehler's two-out, two-run triple to right field that chased home Chaunda Poulin and Sullivan.
 
A pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth off Pitt-Johnstown reliever Avery Smiach set the final at 7-0.
 
Lupfer went 2-for-3 and Mylee Gdula singled for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Smith suffered the loss and slipped to 1-2 after allowing five runs (4 earned) on seven hits over the first three innings.  Smiach tossed the final three innings and limited the Red Raiders to two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out four.
 
Shippensburg's Dani Hayward improved to 4-0 with a complete game shutout.  Hayward gave up just three hits, fanned eight, and walked three.
 
Caitlyn Martell had three hits in five at-bats and an RBI, and Sullivan collected two hits and an RBI for Shippensburg.
 
In game two, Meghan McDonough walked to lead off the game, Isabella DePalma was hit by a pitch with one out, and Lupfer delivered a two-out RBI single to right to give Pitt-Johnstown an early lead.
 
Shippensburg answered in the bottom of the second to go on top on Koehler's run scoring double to left and Martell's RBI single to center.
 
Pitt-Johnstown starter Mahlon Yonkin kept it a one run game until the fifth when Wilmot tripled home Sarah Sabocsik and Rilee Erlacher followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Red Raiders' lead it to 4-1.
 
Yonkin took the loss and dropped to 2-1.  Yonkin surrendered four runs on 11 hits, while striking out one and walking one in six innings.
 
Luper went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Annabelle Helt and Kaylee Smolko each singled for the Mountain Cats.
 
Mikayla Fontana picked up the win in relief of Mya Parkinson after limiting Pitt-Johnstown scoreless on three hits in four innings.  Parkinson gave up one run and struck out six in the first three innings.
 
Shippensburg is now 7-3.
 
The Mountain Cats will take on Winston Salem State (NC) and Bluefield State (WV) on Saturday and West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling (WV) on Sunday in Salem, Va., before making their home debut with a non-conference doubleheader against Salem (WV) on March 18 at 2 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Softball Field.
