MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown could not generate enough offense in an 8-3 and 3-0 doubleheader sweep by nationally ranked Millersville on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Park.
The Mountain Cats fell to 9-8 on the year.
Game One—Millersville 8, Pitt-Johnstown 3
The Marauders jumped out to a 3-0 lead to put the Mountain Cats in a deficit they could not overcome.
Jacob Cramer doubled with two outs in the second and later scored when Jandel Maldonado reached on an error to get the Mountain Cats on the board and make it 3-1.
Down 5-1 entering the fifth, Maldonado led off with a single before freshman Jean Pierre Noury crushed his first home run of his collegiate career to trim the deficit to 5-3. Millersville added three more runs in the bottom of the inning to set the final.
Calvin Iseminger doubled in the sixth. Alex Ebeling and Zac LeGars recorded back-to-back singles in the seventh, but the Mountain Cats could not inflict any damage.
Ben Tomb was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs —five earned— on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Zyler Freedman threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Game Two—Millersville 3, Pitt-Johnstown 0
The Marauders struck for a run on two hits in the first inning to take a lead that they never relinquished.
The Mountain Cats managed just two hits off of Millersville starter Eli Simonton. Those came on a two-out single from Aidan Steinbugl in the second and a two-out double courtesy of Brody Roberts in the fifth.
Pitt-Johnstown also had two runners on with one out in the first after LeGars was hit by a pitch and Iseminger walked, but Simonton struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.
Millersville tacked on two runs on three hits in the fifth off starter Brian Pirone, who suffered the loss on the mound after giving up all three runs while scattering eight hits, five strikeouts and three walks over 4 1/3 innings. Vinny Chirdon tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Pitt-Johnstown and Millersville will wrap up the four-game weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
