MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown never quite cracked the code against nationally ranked Millersville, falling 5-2 and 4-0 in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Park.
The Mountain Cats dropped all four games during the weekend series and slipped to 9-10 on the year.
Game One—Millersville 5, Pitt-Johnstown 2
Millersville scored a run apiece in the first and second innings before posting two runs in its half of the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Pitt-Johnstown managed only one hit, a leadoff double in the second from Karson Reffner, through the first four frames.
Aidan Steinbugl and Crusen Stover recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the fifth before Millersville starter Matt Shamany worked out of the jam. Shamany threw six scoreless innings to earn the win.
With one out in the seventh, Steinbugl began a short-lived rally with a double down the right field line. Stover and Tate Minich both walked before Brody Roberts drew a full-count walk to pick up an RBI and make it 5-1. Alex Ebeling then reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Stover.
Millersville reliever Gavin Lill ended the game on a strikeout.
Aiden Coleman suffered the loss on the mound, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits over four innings. Reliever Jimmy Kunst surrendered one earned run on one hit in two innings of work.
Game Two—Millersville 4, Pitt-Johnstown 0
Unlike the opener, neither team generated many scoring opportunities through the first five innings.
The Mountain Cats, however, could not take advantage and had only two hits against three Millersville hurlers.
Wesley Conville led off the second with a single, but was thrown out at second base. Jacob Cramer later singled to start the fourth but was erased one batter later on a double play.
Pitt-Johnstown also worked five walks, including two by Steinbugl and one apiece from Calvin Iseminger, Roberts and Stover, but none of those led to any damage.
Millersville pushed across four runs in the sixth inning to take control for good.
Pitt-Johnstown opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against California (Pa.) at EQT Park in Washington.
