Mia Smith did it all for the Mountain Cats in Saturday's 4-1 win over Bluefield State (WV) in Salem, Va. Smith connected for a two-run homer and struck out 12 in the circle to help the Mountain Cats improve to 5-4 on the year.
Meghan McDonough led off with a base hit, moved to second on an error and scored on
Isabella DePalma's single to give Pitt-Johnstown a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Bluefield State took advantage of a wild pitch to knot it in the bottom of the first, but that's all the scoring Smith would allow.
It stayed tied at one until the sixth when
Jessica Pugh a one-out walk and Smith followed two batters later with a two-run home run.
The Mountain cats added an insurance run in the seventh.
Kylie Mettrick singled, moved to second on McDonough's bunt single, and to third on a
Brynnae Coe fly out. Mettrick then stole home to set the final at 4-1.
Smith evened her record at 2-2 after giving up just one run on 1 hit, while striking out a dozen in the complete-game effort.
Along with Smith's two-run homer, McDonough two hits and scored a run, and DePalma had a hit and drove in one for Pitt-Johnstown.
Janessah Nappi's one-out single in the bottom of the second accounted for the Big Blues' lone hit.
Bluefield State fell to 3-13.
The Mountain Cats will wrap up the trip to Virginia against West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling (WV) on Sunday before making their home debut with a non-conference doubleheader against Salem (WV) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Pitt-Johnstown Softball Field.
