Mountain Cats Swept by California (Pa.) to Open PSAC West Slate

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown could not generate enough scoring chances to keep up with California (Pa.) in 11-2 and 7-3 setbacks to open up PSAC West play on Saturday afternoon at Point Stadium.

The Mountain Cats dropped to 9-12 (0-2 PSAC).

Game 1: California (Pa.) 11, Pitt-Johnstown 2

Pitt-Johnstown racked up nine hits, including eight singles, but couldn't do much damage against Vulcans starter Beau Bigam, who threw a complete game to earn the win.

The Vulcans scored one run on three hits in the second and two more on two hits in the third to go up 3-0. California (Pa.) broke the game open with six runs on four hits in the fifth.

Wesley Conville and Brody Roberts led off Pitt-Johnstown's fifth inning with back-to-back base-hits. Alex Ebeling singled with one out before Karson Reffner lined a 2-RBI single to make it 9-2.

Ben Tomb was handed the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, over 4 ? innings. Baron Dionis, Cole Sansom and Lucas Peterson all threw in relief.

Reffner finished with two hits and Jacob Cramer recorded two hits, including a double in the sixth.

Game 2: California (Pa.) 7, Pitt-Johnstown 3

After the Vulcans led off the game with a home run, Tyler Danko returned the favor by crushing a home run in the second to even it at 1-1.

Reffner slapped an RBI single to score Ebeling, who singled to lead off the third, to draw  the Mountain Cats back to even at 2-all.

The Vulcans jumped back on top 3-2 in the fifth only to have the Mountain Cats respond again in the bottom half. Ebeling cracked a sharp single to start and later scored on Reffner's RBI groundout. However, California (Pa.) struck for four runs on two hits in its half of the seventh to jump ahead. Pitt-Johnstown went down in order to end it.

Brian Pirone received a no-decision after tossing 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts compared to just one walk. Vinny Chirdon took the loss after surrendering three runs on one hit in an inning of work.

Coleman Fletcher gave up one earned run on one hit in two innings of relief to pick up the win for the Vulcans, who moved to 11-5 (2-0 PSAC).

The two teams will wrap up the four-game weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at EQT Park in Washington.
