Mountain Cats Earn Doubleheader Split Against California (Pa.)

Danko, TylerWASHINGTON, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown bounced back in its final at-bat to steal a 3-2 victory over California (Pa.) in the opener before being handed a 5-0 setback in game two to settle for a split in a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at EQT Park.

The Mountain Cats dropped three out of four in the weekend series and sit at 10-13 (1-2 PSAC).

Game 1: Pitt-Johnstown 3, California (Pa.) 2

Down 2-1 heading into the seventh, Karson Reffner and Tyler Danko gave the Mountain Cats life with back-to-back base-hits to start the inning.

Following a flyout and a pitching change for the Vulcans, pinch-hitter Lucas Muffie was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That set up Noah Helms, whose groundball to the shortstop led to a throwing error that allowed Danko and pinch-runner Aaron Smearman to race home and give the Mountain Cats a 3-2 advantage.

Reliever Jimmy Kunst picked up the win after working around a fielding error and a walk in the seventh to close it out.

Aiden Coleman tossed five innings and received a no-decision after giving up just one earned run on four hits.

After being sent down in order in each of the first three innings, Jacob Cramer walked and stole second with one out before Danko cracked an RBI double with two outs to put the Mountain Cats on top 1-0, their first lead of the series.

Ryan Sluk suffered the loss for California (Pa.), which used five different pitchers.

Game 2: California (Pa.) 5, Pitt-Johnstown 0

Scoring chances were few and far between in the nightcap as the Mountain Cats were limited to just three singles and eight total base runners.

It was scoreless through the first three and a half innings before the Vulcans strung together five hits to go up 3-0. They tacked on two insurance runs on three hits in the sixth.

Reffner and Brody Roberts each recorded singles in the second inning. Alex Ebeling singled with one out in the sixth to put two runners on, but was left stranded.

Jared Dowey suffered the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits across four innings. Roman Donis gave up two earned runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

Roman Gill threw four scoreless innings to earn the win for the Vulcans, who are now 12-6 (3-1 PSAC).

Pitt-Johnstown will host Bloomsburg at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Point Stadium.
