Mountain Cats Notch Doubleheader Split Against Slippery Rock

Muffie, LucasJOHNSTOWN, Pa. — One crucial swing lifted Pitt-Johnstown to a 3-1 win over Slippery Rock in the opener before a 5-3 setback in the nightcap led to a PSAC West doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at Point Stadium.

The Mountain Cats sit at 11-15 (2-4 PSAC) heading into the weekend.

Game 1: Pitt-Johnstown 3, Slippery Rock 1

Pitt-Johnstown struck early to build a lead it never surrendered.

Tyler Danko led off the second with a walk before Wesley Conville singled up the middle. That set up Lucas Muffie, who crushed a 3-run home run over the left field fence to put Pitt-Johnstown on top 3-0.

Slippery Rock answered with a run on two hits in the third, but it was the last time either team scratched the scoreboard. That was in large part because of Jimmy Kunst, who allowed just the one earned run, while scattering six hits, four strikeouts and three walks over 5.2 innings to earn the win.

Vinny Chirdon threw 1.1 innings with two strikeouts to pick up the save. Parker Hogge took the loss for Slippery Rock.

Conville, Alex Ebeling and Aaron Smearman all produced two singles for the Mountain Cats, who had at least one base runner in every inning aside from the fifth.

Game 2: Slippery Rock 5, Pitt-Johnstown 3

For the second straight game, the Mountain Cats found a way to deal damage early with three hits in the first. Jared Dowey led off with a sharp single before coming around to score on an RBI double from Calvin Iseminger to make it 1-0.

Ebeling followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0.

The score remained that way until the fifth, when the Mountain Cats manufactured a third run. Aidan Steinbugl doubled with one out and moved to third after Dowey reached on a fielder's choice. Iseminger walked to load the bases, and Ebeling beat out a potential double-play ball to push it to 3-0.

The Rock responded in the sixth with five runs on six hits, including a 3-run home run from Stone Powell, to jump in front.

Pitt-Johnstown put two runners on in the sixth and another in the seventh, but all three were left stranded. Despite 10 strikeouts and no free passes, Brian Pirone suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs on seven hits across five-plus innings of work. Baron Dionis surrendered one earned run on three hits in two innings of relief.

Pitt-Johnstown will visit Slippery Rock for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday to wrap up the four-game series.
