Mountain Cats Fall to Slippery Rock in PSAC West Doubleheader

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown could not cool down the Slippery Rock bats in a 25-1 setback in the opener before a 2-1 loss in the nightcap closed out a PSAC West doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Jack Critchfield Park.

The Mountain Cats slipped to 11-17 (2-6 PSAC) after dropping three out of four to The Rock.

Game 1: Slippery Rock 25, Pitt-Johnstown 1

Pitt-Johnstown never found its footing after Slippery Rock struck for six runs on four hits in the first. The Rock added four runs on two hits in the third before the Mountain Cats scratched the scoreboard in the fourth, when Karson Reffner crushed a solo home run to make it 10-1.

Slippery Rock tacked on eight runs in the fifth and seven more in the sixth to set the final.

Aiden Coleman, who was the first of seven Pitt-Johnstown hurlers, suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Brody Roberts doubled, and Wesley Conville and Lucas Muffie each recorded singles for the Mountain Cats, who were limited to four hits.

Gage Gillott earned the win for Slippery Rock after giving up one run on three hits over four innings.

Game 2: Slippery Rock 2, Pitt-Johnstown 1

Unlike the opener, the Mountain Cats gave themselves opportunities to pull off a late comeback after The Rock took a 2-0 lead in the third.

Pitt-Johnstown recorded only one hit through the first four innings. That changed in the fifth, when Aaron Smearman and Alex Ebeling cracked back-to-back singles to lead off. Calvin Iseminger walked with one out before a passed ball allowed Smearman to trot home and cut the deficit to 2-1.

Despite traffic on the base paths in the sixth and seventh, the Mountain Cats never found the equalizer against Slippery Rock's Michael Kitko.

Tate Minich doubled with two outs in the sixth but was left stranded. Pinch-hitter Crusen Stover worked a one-out walk in the seventh, and with two outs, Conville singled to put two on. However, pinch-runners Talen Kammermeier and Stephen Rodgers were left on after Tyler Danko grounded out to end it.

Jared Dowey was tagged with the loss despite throwing six innings and giving up just two unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Pitt-Johnstown will host Frostburg State in a non-conference matchup at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Point Stadium.
