JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown saw an early lead slip away in an 8-2 loss to Gannon in the opener before a 13-0 setback in game two wrapped up a PSAC West doubleheader on a cloudy Monday afternoon.
The Mountain Cats slipped to 8-11 (2-6 PSAC).
Game 1: Gannon 8, Pitt-Johnstown 2
Junior Meghan McDonough led off the game by sending the third pitch she saw from Gannon starter Miranda Biles over the center field fence for a home run and a 1-0 lead.
It was, however, the last time the Mountain Cats found themselves on top after the Golden Knights responded with a four-spot in the third, which included a 3-run home run from Jenna Clontz.
Down 5-1 in the fifth, the Mountain Cats got a run back after McDonough reached on an error and eventually scored on Jessica Pugh's two-out RBI single.
Gannon answered with a run on two hits in the sixth and two more off three hits in the seventh.
Avery Smiach tossed all seven innings and took the loss after giving up eight runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts and two walks. McDonough finished with two hits and scored both runs, while freshmen Kylie Mettrick and Taylor Lupfer each recorded a base-hit.
Game 2: Gannon 13, Pitt-Johnstown 0 (5 innings)
Gannon scratched out four singles in the first inning to score three runs and take the lead for good.
Pitt-Johnstown, meanwhile, was limited to six hits during the run-rule shortened five-inning affair. McDonough secured her third straight multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-3, including a double to lead off the first.
The Golden Knights tallied a run in the second before bringing the game to a close with a four-spot in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
Mettrick, DePalma, Mylee Gdula and Brynnae Coe all provided singles for Pitt-Johnstown.
Mia Smith suffered the loss in the circle after surrendering four earned runs on five hits in three innings of work. Mahlon Yonkin and Gianna Stanek each threw in an inning of relief.
Makenzie Wade threw a complete game to earn the win for the Golden Knights, who moved to 10-10 (5-3 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will visit Slippery Rock for a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Friday before traveling to Clarion for another conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
