Mountain Cats Fall Twice to California (Pa.) on Senior Day

Paterson, AudreyJOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Pitt-Johnstown had its Senior Day spoiled by way of 2-1 and 11-8 setbacks to California (Pa.) in a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats slipped to 12-17 (6-10 PSAC).

Before the first pitch, seniors Mia Smith, Brynnae Coe and Audrey Paterson were honored for their time and dedication to the program.

Game 1: California (Pa.) 2, Pitt-Johnstown 1

The Vulcans scored two runs in their half of the second on a 2-RBI single to go on top.

Jessica Pugh launched a solo home run over the left-center field fence with two outs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Despite creating two prime opportunities to tie the game over the final three innings, the Mountain Cats could not secure the equalizer.

Kylie Mettrick singled and stole second with two outs in the fifth before being left stranded. With one out in the seventh, Paterson singled and was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on Gianna Surra's ensuing single to the gap in right-center.

Pitt-Johnstown recorded seven hits, including base-hits from Smith, Taylor Lupfer and Sara Solberg.

Smith, who on Friday in a win over Seton Hill became the first pitcher in program history to reach 400 career strikeouts, was tagged with the loss after scattering nine hits, striking out eight and issuing no walks.

Game 2: California (Pa.) 11, Pitt-Johnstown 8

Coe, BrynnaeThe Mountain Cats led by as many as three on two occasions over the first five innings, but were undone by a six-run seventh inning from the Vulcans that proved to be the difference.

Mahlon Yonkin took the loss in the circle, giving up nine runs, six earned, on 12 hits, with five strikeouts compared to one walk. Gianna Stanek tossed an inning of relief.

California (Pa.) struck for two runs in the first. Pitt-Johnstown answered when Isabella DePalma doubled with two outs and scored on Pugh's RBI double.

The Mountain Cats erupted for a four-spot in the third to take control. Mylee Gdula singled with one out, moved to third on a double from DePalma and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Pugh. Keira Link then slapped a 2-RBI single and scored on a throwing error to make it 5-2.

Pugh homered to lead off the fifth to push the lead back to 6-3, and Solberg crushed a solo home run in the sixth that gave the Mountain Cats a brief 7-5 advantage heading into the seventh.

Gdula, DePalma and Pugh all enjoyed multi-hit games for the Mountain Cats.

Autumn Bielecki was credited with the win for the Vulcans, who moved to 12-22 (7-9 PSAC).

Pitt-Johnstown will host Slippery Rock in a PSAC West doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, April 17.
