Mia Smith Makes History: Senior Ace Breaks All-Time Strikeout Record in 8-3 Win Over Seton Hill on April 10th

Smith, MiaMia Smith has rewritten the Pitt-Johnstown softball record books in her senior season, and on Friday April 10th, she put an exclamation point on a career that has quietly become the most accomplished pitching tenure in Mountain Cat history. Smith struck out her 400th career batter in the first inning against Seton Hill, tossed a complete game, and capped the afternoon with a home run as the Mountain Cats rolled to an 8-3 PSAC West victory over the Griffins.

Smith entered the 2026 season needing just 12 strikeouts to surpass former Mountain Cat ace Melissa Wagner's career strikeout record of 338, set over a four-year career from 2015 to 2018. She wasted no time. On February 28 against Davis & Elkins, she recorded her 339th career punchout to claim the record outright. From there she kept building, and entering the doubleheader against Seton Hill she sat at 399 career strikeouts. Her 400th came in the very first inning against the Griffins — and she was just getting started.

Smith delivered a dominant complete-game effort, going 7.0 innings with 8 strikeouts, 7 hits, 3 earned runs and 2 walks to earn the win. Then, in the bottom of the first inning, she stepped into the batter's box and launched a home run — driving in 2 runs and giving the Mountain Cats an early lead they would never relinquish. She finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 RBI.

"Mia is a wonderful young woman who has meant so much to Pitt-Johnstown softball. We are incredibly proud of her," said Pitt-Johnstown Athletic Director, Abby Gearhart.

The milestone caps a four-year career defined by durability and consistency. Smith has made 81 appearances — first all-time at UPJ — while throwing 454 career innings, also first in program history. She holds the single-season program records for both appearances (25) and innings pitched (137.0), both set in 2025. Her 28 career victories rank first all-time as well.

"Mia has been the heart and soul of our pitching staff for four years. Her work ethic, competitiveness, and love for this program have set a standard that will be felt long after she graduates. Mia getting her 400th strikeout is an unbelievable accomplishment, and I am very proud of her!,   'said head coach Niki Cognigni-Pecora.

It all started with a memorable freshman campaign in 2023, when Smith went 10-10 with 111 strikeouts across 132.2 innings and earned Pitt-Johnstown's Female Freshman Athlete of the Year award. She followed that with 116 strikeouts as a sophomore and 100 more as a junior — logging 17 complete games each season — before putting together her best ERA of any full season as a senior at 2.66.

Before arriving in Johnstown, Smith was already making headlines across western Pennsylvania. A four-year letter-winner at Penn-Trafford High School, she compiled a 42-8 record with a 1.97 ERA and 400 career strikeouts at the prep level — a number she has now matched at the collegiate level. She was a Tribune-Review HSSN Head of the Class 5A Softball Player of the Year and a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette All-Area selection, helping lead Penn-Trafford to a 2019 PIAA 5A State Championship. She is majoring in Biology/Pre-Physical Therapy.

The record. The 400-strikeout milestone. A home run for good measure. Mia Smith's legacy at Pitt-Johnstown is written in the record books — and her senior season still has games left to play.
