Mountain Cats Open WVIAC With 2-1 Win at Concord

09/19/2009

Josh Wentz (Wallenpaupack, Pa.) and Derik Swope (Harleysville, Pa.) each found the back of the net to lead the Mountain Cat soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Concord (WV) University on Saturday to kick-off the 2009 WVIAC schedule. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 3-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.
The Mountain Cats opened the scoring and took a 1-0 halftime lead on Wentz' header off of Joe Cronan's (Indiana, Pa.) free kick in the 39th minute.
Pitt-Johnstown extended the lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute when Swope took Marc Bucci's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) throughball and beat Concord goalkeeper Jamie Greenwood on a breakaway. Concord made it 2-1 on Ryan Grimmett's goal with two minutes to play, but that was as close as it would get.
Craig Neff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) made two saves in goal for Pitt-Johnstown, which outshot Concord 12-10, to improve to 3-4-0. Greenwood took the loss after making five saves for Concord, which dropped to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2 in the WVIAC.
The Mountain Cats travel to the University of Charleston (WV) on Sunday for a WVIAC match, before returning home to host a conference match against Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
