Ben Watkins Tops In Division II In E.R.A.

Pitt-Johnstown senior right-hander Ben Watkins (Tire Hill, Pa.) led NCAA Division II in earned run average at .84 in 53.1 innings-pitched when the 2009 final statistics were released. Watkins, the Daktronics Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and a Daktronics Third-Team All-American, was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 40th Round of June's Major League Baseball Draft.
Watkins posted a 7-1 record allowed just five earned runs in 53.1 innings of work to lead the country in earned runs average at .84. In addition, Watkins finished second in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings at .68 and 15th in both strikeouts per nine innings at 10.64 (63 strikeouts) and hits allowed per nine innings at 6.59 (39 hits allowed).
Watkins is currently pitching in the Single A New York-Penn League for the Staten Island Yankees where he has a 1.50 E.R.A. in four appearances. Watkins has given up one earned run and struckout five in six innings-pitched.
