Volleyball Wins in Five Sets at West Liberty

Jessica Heidenthal (Clymer, Pa.) and Karen Schmidt (Boswell, Pa.) each had 14 kills to lead the Lady Cat volleyball team to a five set WVIAC victory at West Liberty (WV) University on Tuesday. Pitt-Johnstown has won four straight matches and improved to 11-13 overall and 7-5 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats dropped the first set, 25-17, but bounced back to win the next two 25-23 and 25-17. West Liberty claimed set four 27-25, but Pitt-Johnstown put the match away with a 15-9 win in the final set.
Along with her 14 kills, Schmidt also had six digs. Kelsey Shanabrook (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) had seven kills , two block solos and four block assists, while Tayler Vebares (Red Lion, Pa.) chipped in seven kills.
Beth Kendera (Johnstown, Pa.) led the way with six block solos and six block assists, and Ashley Dirado (Greensburg, Pa.) finished with four block solos and three block assists.
Pitt-Johnstown's Kayla Petrilla (Johnstown, Pa.) (23 assists) and Nikki Oakes (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (20 assists) combined for 43 set assists, and Kelsey Kohler (Johnstown, Pa.) ended with a team-high 27 digs.
With the loss, the Hilltoppers fell to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in conference-play.
The Lady Cats travel to a WVIAC match at Wheeling Jesuit (WV) University on Friday, before returning home to host West Virginia Wesleyan College for a Senior Night conference match on November 2 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
