Volleyball Opens WVIAC Play With Home Loss to Fairmont State

Head Coach Linda Renzi's Lady Cat volleyball team opened up WVIAC conference play with a tough three-games-to-two loss to visiting Fairmont State (WV) University, Tuesday night in the Sports Center. Junior middle hitter Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) led the Lady Cats with 15 kills. With the loss Pitt Johnstown is now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats and Falcons battled back and forth all night. Pitt Johnstown claimed game on 30-21, before dropping the second game, 19-30. Coach Renzi's team responded with a 30-26 win in game three, but the Lady Cats could not close the door and suffered 28-30 and 15-17 losses to end the match.
Along with Irwin's 15 kills, sophomore outside hitter Kelly Miller (Stoystown, Pa.) added 12 kills, and junior middle hitter Casey Jo Ritenour (Latrobe, Pa.) collected five block solos and eight block assists. Sophomore Abby Gearhart (Elton, Pa.) had eight kills, and junior defensive specialist Katie Shadron (Ligonier, Pa.) chipped in seven digs.
Following the victory Fairmont State improved to 1-7 overall and 1-0 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats travel to Point Park University for a tri-match with Gannon University on Saturday, before playing host to local rival Mount Aloysius College on Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Sports Center.
