Volleyball Moves to WVIAC Quarters With Sweep Over Shepherd

Kristin Irwin (Bellefonte, Pa.) had eight kills and two service aces to guide the #8-seeded Lady Cat volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over #9-seeded Shepherd (WV) University in Thursday's First Round of the 2008 WVIAC Volleyball Tournament at the Catholic Sports Center in Charleston, WV. With the win, Pitt-Johnstown, 21-12 on the year, advances to the quarterfinals to take on top-seeded West Virginia State University on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
The Lady Cats swept the Rams 25-14, 25-20 and 25-21.
Along with Irwin, Kayla Lape (Fishertown, Pa.) collected six kills and two block solos, while Taylor Hrescak (Johnstown, Pa.) and Nicole Houser (Penn Run, Pa.) each had five kills. Houser also had three block solos for head coach Linda Renzi. Merissa Larrew (Irwin, Pa.) led the Lady Cats with 15 set assists, and Taylor King (York, Pa.) chipped in nine assists. Katie Shadron (Ligonier, Pa.) and Abby Gearhart (Elton, Pa.) paced Pitt-Johnstown with 12 and eight digs, respectively.
With the loss, Shepherd's season ended with an 11-22 overall record.
