Carman's Basket Lifts Lady Cats Over Cal-PA

Nicole Carman's driving lay-up with six seconds left to play lifted the Lady Cats basketball team to a 73-72 victory over California University (PA), Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the PSAC Western Division.
 
California (PA) ran out to a 15-7 lead on a Elena Antonenko lay-up six minutes into the game, but Pitt-Johnstown countered with a 20-11 run over the next 7:41 to go up for the first time.
 
Back-to-back Carman 3-pointers got the run started, before Inaya Stephenson's bucket in the paint put the Lady Cats in front 27-26 with just over six minutes left in the half.
 
Following six leading changes and a pair of ties, two of Jasmine Harper's 14 first half points put Pitt-Johnstown up by four, and another basket from Stephenson as time expired gave the Lady Cats a 42-36 halftime advantage.
 
The Vulcans opened the second half on a 10-2 spurt to regain the lead 46-44 on a jumper from Emma Mahady.
 
The Lady Cats came back with a 3-pointer from Olivia Rizzo at 14:18 to rebuild their lead to 55-50.
 
Pitt-Johnstown held the lead until the 3:24 mark when Mahady scored on a driving lay-up that put California (PA) back into lead, 69-67.
 
Mahady then connected on a free-throw with 1:10 left take make it 72-61 Vulcans, but Carman's driving lay-up with six seconds lifted Pitt-Johnstown to the one-point victory.
 
Harper's double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds led four Lady Cats who scored in double figures.  Leah Hansen scored 14 points, while Carman and Stephenson each scored a dozen points.  Stephenson also grabbed eight rebounds.  Kayla DeCriscio finished with eight points, four rebounds, and five assists in the victory.
 
The Lady Cats, who out-rebounded the Vulcans 41-34, ended the day shooting 48.3% (29-60) from the floor.  Pitt-Johnstown was also 6-14 from 3-point range and 9-10 from the free-throw line.  California (PA) was held to 41.3% shooting (26-63), including just 2-8 from behind the 3-point line.  The Vulcans also hit 18-26 from the charity stripe.
 
Johnson pulled down one rebound and stands in 21st-place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding List with 533.  Johnson is 45 rebounds shy of Amy Kessler (1988-92) for 20th place on the list.
 
The Vulcans got a game-high 20 points from Antonenko in the loss.  Mahady scored 14 points, and Chelsey McKnight chipped in 13 points for California (PA), which slipped to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in conference-play.
 
The Lady Cats travel to PSAC games at Seton Hill University on Wednesday and Gannon University on January 22, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Mercyhurst University on January 25.  The Lady Cats will tip-off at 2 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 4 p.m.
