First-place in the PSAC Eastern Division volleyball standings was on the line Tuesday night in the Sports Center when Lock Haven and Pitt-Johnstown did battle. A victory would put the Lady Cats in a first-place tie with the Bald Eagles, and that's what happened.
Kendall Mahony had 13 kills to help Pitt-Johnstown bounce back from an opening set loss to earn a 3-1 win and climb to the top spot in the PSAC East. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 14-11 overall, and 10-8 in the PSAC.
An attack error by
Delaney Roman gave Lock Haven an early 10-5 lead. The Lady Cats answered with an 8-3 run to knot it at 13, before the Bald Eagles pushed the lead back out to 20-17 on a kill by Cody Anderson.
Larissa Swank's kill got the Lady Cats to within one at 23-22, but Lock Haven held on for a 25-23 first set victory.
The loss gave the Lady Cats a wake-up call to start the next set. Pitt-Johnstown raced out to an 8-0 lead on Roman's kill and extended it to 14-3 on a Lock Haven ball handling error. Lock Haven cut it to 17-10, but another kill from Swank extended it to 21-10 and Pitt-Johnstown went on to coast to the 25-14 win.
After falling behind to start the third set, the Lady Cats came back to build a 9-5 lead and never looked back. Pitt-Johnstown extended it to 20-14 and closed out a 25-21 win to go in front two-sets-to-one on Roman's kill.
Pitt-Johnstown took control early and put the match away with a 25-16 win in the fourth set. A
Devan Orr service ace staked the Lady Cats out to a 13-6 advantage. Pitt-Johnstown made it 20-10 on a Mahony kill and an attack error by Lock Haven. The Lady Cats got another kill from Mahony to close out the set and the match.
Mahony had 13 kills and two service aces to lead a group of three Lady Cats who finished the night with double-digit kills. Roman had 12 kills and 12 digs, while
Cambria Wierman had 11 kills and 16 digs.
Madeline George also had nine kills in the victory.
Devan Orr gathered a match-high 34 digs for Pitt-Johnstown.
Nikki Oakes collected 29 set assists, six digs, and two service aces, and
Nicole Curran got 20 assists.
Cody Anderson led Lock Haven with 14 kills, but the Bald Eagles fell 16-10 overall, and 10-8 in the PSAC.
The Lady Cats host a non-conference match against Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Thursday at 6 p.m., before closing out the 2014 home schedule with PSAC matches against Cheyney University on Friday at 7 p.m. and West Chester University for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
