Pitt-Johnstown got a career-high 17 kills from
Cambria Wierman, but West Chester University outlasted Pitt-Johnstown 32-30 in the fourth set to secure a 3-1 PSAC victory, Friday night in West Chester. The Lady Cats slipped to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC.
The Golden Rams defeated Pitt-Johnstown 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, and 32-30.
West Chester used six straight points to race out to a 10-3 lead on Karleigh Lutz's kill. The Golden Rams pushed it out to 20-8, before back-to-back aces from
Devan Orr cut the Pitt-Johnstown deficit to 23-14, but West Chester went on to take the opening set, 25-14.
Kills from
Kendall Mahony and Larissa to open the second set put the Lady Cats in front early, before West Chester countered with a 13-6 run go up 13-8. Wierman's kill narrowed it to 16-14, but Pitt-Johnstown was never able to get over the hump and the Golden Rams went on to a 25-21 win to take a 2-sets-to-none advantage.
West Chester looked to complete the sweep in the third set. The Golden Rams built an 18-11 lead, but Pitt-Johnstown stormed back with a 15-6 spurt to stay alive with a 26-24 win. Mahony's kill knotted it at 24, before a kill from
Madeline George capped the comeback and kept the Lady Cats alive.
In the fourth set, West Chester outscored Pitt-Johnstown 8-3 to climb out to a 17-11 lead. The Lady Cats answered with four straight points of their own to cut it to 17-15. Pitt-Johnstown eventually tied it at 22 on a West Chester attack error, and take a 24-23 lead on Swank's kill. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as the Golden Rams got a kill from Marina Sharkey to close out the match with a 32-30 victory.
Delaney Roman and
Kendall Mahony contributed eight kills each, while
Nikki Oakes and
Nicole Curran had 20 assists a piece.
Devan Orr had 22 digs and Wierman added 11 digs. Orr also collected five service aces.
With the win, West Chester improved to 11-6 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Cheyney University on Saturday and to a PSAC Crossover for four matches next weekend. The Lady Cats will play their next home match on October 17 when Millersville University visits the Sports Center.
